Title: Most comfortable seat?
Post by: Phatnomad on August 26, 2019, 03:30:26 PM
What is the most comfortable women's seat for the rad city?  My wife has a rad city step through. She sits in an upright position. She is let's say "hefty".  She enjoys riding and it is good for her health. Thanks for the help.

I don't have one myself but yes there are a bunch of options for Cloud 9 seats. Note you may have to adjust the rails slightly depending on the one you get:

I just want to report back that according to my wife the Cloud 9 seat is a game changer. It has kind of put off our decision to buy a suspension seatpost. I unknowingly had a gel style Cloud 9 seat just sitting in my garage and I didn't have to adjust the rails at all for it to fit. If you're at all uncomfortable on the seat it's worth a shot!

Two questions:
I bought a Radrunner for my wife and the seat is actually bolted to the seat post so we cannot switch out the seat itself.  I'll need to buy a seat post and new seat.

Secondly, there are many Cloud 9 seats on Amazon.   For those of you who purchased one that works, did you get the:
- Cloud 9 Bicycle suspension cruiser saddle / cruiser gel sofa?
- Cloud 9 Comfort ladies saddle?
- Cloud 9 Cruiser select saddle?

Thanks for the help!

Cloud 9 makes comfy seats at fair prices. Plus their pretty durable. I got one of those Sella Royal Gypsy seats and really liked it, but then I bought a Seatlock. I love the convenience and compact nature of the Seatylock but it sure lacks the overall comfort of the Sella Royal.

I'm about to pull the trigger on the Cloud 9 Cruiser Select Airflow because of this post. Only wish I could find it with faster shipping than 2 weeks!

I'm looking at the Cloud 9 as well but which one? I'm think the  suspension cruiser saddle because my senior behind has "matured" over the years! Any clarification on the model is appreciated!

I ordered the Cloud 9 Cruiser Select Airflow, and have put about 50 miles on it. It's more squishy than I expected, but I got used to it. MUCH more comfortable than the stock seat, and I find myself lifting off the saddle less often. The airflow vent works well. TOO well when it's chilly, lol. I don't like the big bright bold blue logo on the back, but oh well! I like the saddle a lot.

I purchased
Sunlite Cloud-9 Bicycle Suspension Cruiser Saddle, Cruiser Gel, Tri-color Black to replace the original seat on my City Step Thru3.
It is slightly better but my Butt still hurts with this seat. I bought it after reading the reviews you folks have posted here. I don't know if I got a bad seat or got the wrong one but it surely is not a very comfotable seat. I need something better.

I just installed the Cloud-9 Cruiser Select Saddle (the one with the cutout in the middle) and it's night and day comfort wise vs the stock seat.  Not sure if the cutout in the middle makes a difference?  I tried 3 different Cloud-9 seats and this one has been the best for me.

Rad City owner here. I have the Cloud 9 cruiser seat also. I also installed a suspension seat post. While they offer improvement over the stock set up, my rear end still gets sore.  Maybe something ergonomically incorrect with the riding position? Could be that I'm 65 and that's just the way it is anymore......

TDR,

I experimented with 875 different positions (ok, slight exaggeration) before I got things to where I felt comfortable. From my perspective it's a combination to seat height, seat tilt, and handle bar height and rake.  I also have the suspension seat post from Rad and I installed an adjustable stem.  The adjustable stem has made a great difference for me and allowed me to dial in a perfect position which is more upright, less pressure on the arms, more pressure at the rear of the seat where the padding is.  But, you have to play with it. I just rode for a few miles, adjusted things then rode some more, made adjustments and I finally got things right.  It really doesn't take much adjustment as just a few mm one way or another makes a big difference.

I got the Cloud-9 Bicycle Suspension Cruiser Saddle, Cruiser Gel, Tri-color Black off Amazon. I am 6' and 165lbs. I did a 25 mile ride today and my butt was sore and hurting. Will a different Cloud 9 seat make any difference?

This is the one I got.

I tried this MSDADA seat from Amazon and so far, after 100 miles +,  I have been really happy with it.  It has ample padding for me (6ft,175lbs) and it seems to have a bit longer rail on the bottom which allows for a greater degree of adjustment horizontally, front to back.  With the adjustable stem that I have I have moved my position a bit more upright and further back.

Looking at the Cloud9, but wondering. After upgrading, do you miss the handle under the stock seat? I like having the handle for moving the bike around, but am finding the seat uncomfortable.

I miss the handle. It came in handy for moving the bike around, and we have a 9 year old who now has to grab the sides of the seat when she's riding on the rack seat. I have a set of rear handlebars, but they are an extra hassle to install.

I settled on a Cloud 9 after trying 4 others (including a different Cloud 9) and don't miss the handle at all on my Mini Step-Through, but I've installed the rack and small basket, so I can just grab the forward edge of the basket if I need a lifting point there.  Really love the Cloud 9 model I settled on, which is combined with a Redshift Shockstop suspension post - that combo eliminated the previous buttaches.

Good stuff. A big-ass saddle with thick wads of foam seems intuitive, but is rarely more comfortable in the long run. Rad chose well with the stock saddle on my Mini, imo. As with all the good seats, you just need to allow time to break it in.

Some of the reasons why your bike seat is uncomfortable include the wrong bike size, the wrong handlebar position, and even the wrong outfit. For a comfortable ride, you should choose a suitable saddle. Make sure the saddle is the right size for your butt. Choose a product where your body weight is borne by your sitting bones, not the soft tissues around them.

There are many ways to make your exercise bike seat more comfortable (https://biketoworkday.us/make-exercise-bike-seat-more-comfortable/). Because constant movement increases friction, you need to find shorts that fit well to protect you from a long workout. Although there is no exact position that everyone must follow, you must know some cycling positions that are suitable for your body when working out on an exercise bike.

Choosing a suitable saddle is the optimal solution to help cyclists not feel pain and feel comfortable during cycling, right. I believe the cloud 9 seat model will be the best choice for you. It gets you a comfortable seat while cycling  (https://www.bikeshepherd.org/how-to-make-my-bike-seat-more-comfortable/)and for a reasonable price.

I agree.  The seat is only half the solution.  You need proper clothing, especially if, like most people and myself, you have gained weight as you got older.  Also, the ebike allows you to ride longer, ride faster (more bumpy), ride off road (bumpy) than a regular bike which is great but increased sitting time and bumps make comfort a bigger issue.

It is a different game. I've seldom ride 20 mph in a regular bike in my youth.

There is utility for padded shorts.  Many people buy them and use them.  That is why they are so available.

A lot of great post and recommendations, hard to be right or wrong as everyone built a little differently, that said it's nice to have so many options.

As far as comfort on an e-bike I am 100% convinced a seat suspension is needed. The bikes are typically heavier then what most are used to and we ride them longer distances (when I say "we" I define that as someone like me who has a gravel/hybrid for trails and the like and a Electra Townie for light cruising, also what I would say is a regular rider, not going to Tour De France this year but can get on it when needed).

So my choices are a seat from ISM https://ismseat.com/ (they make a variety of applications)

For suspension I am leaning toward the dropper suspension from PNW https://www.pnwcomponents.com/collections/shop-all-droppers/products/coast-suspension-dropper-post-external. I like this because on an e-bike being so heavy I want to adjust the seat real low when I'm on trails and nice and high while pedaling but when I'm riding I find I'm on or in mixed environments most of the time and it would be AWESOME to switch on the fly.

I don't think you could go wrong with the SunTour or some of the other similarly priced high end units, it more or less comes down to what type of dampining material (spring vs rubber) at that point and I still may go this route when I upgrade due to cost. I have some relatively inexpensive ones now until I decide.

Currently I ride a RAD City 5 HS, I have modified the tires to a gravel tire at 2.3 wide (best move you could make on tire weight alone, not to mention out of round and generally poor quality stock tires). Wife has same but step through, with front basket (of course).

Lastly I'll say if money were no object I would have multiple bikes for the situation. I have to compromise comfort vs performance vs cost vs use case and most everything else.

So far I'm happy with my mods and I saw a comment somewhere on this forum that bike parts are relatively inexpensive (all relative I know, I did say relatively but it can get crazy) so it's fun to buy and try a few things and learn along the way. For me it kind of comes down to making the whole journey fun so I agree with that attitude.
