RadRover / Re: Bolton controller enclosure?
November 08, 2021, 05:34:57 AM
I've been looking for one as well. I got one from Amazon that it would fit inside, but it wouldn't fit in the original location on my Rad Rover 5, so I returned it. If you find one that works, please let us know where to find it.

General Chat / Waterproof controller and display?
October 22, 2021, 10:45:35 AM
I have the Bolton 35A controller and the KT-LCD8H color display on my RadRover 5. Does anyone know how waterproof these two things are? Can I ride in the rain with them, or do I need to do something special to protect them? Does anyone have any ideas, products, or things they have done for extra protection in the rain?

I've used a small piece of black rubber automotive type hose that I cut and split to fit. You can buy it by the foot at AutoZone, Home Depot, etc.

RadWagon / Re: Spare battery transportation
October 20, 2021, 09:21:32 AM
I'm not sure if this will work on a RadWagon, but I use this on my Rad Rover 5. It has straps on the bottom and I attach it to my rear rack or inside my front basket. It holds the Rad battery very well with a little extra room. I also added a piece of 3/4" foam in the bottom of the bag just for some extra cushion.

Rad Modifications / Re: Caps for Wagon kickstand?

Maybe a rubber or vinyl chair leg cap? If it's the same kickstand as my Rover 5, it's not round though. It's about 2" on its widest part at the base. Something like one of these might work.

Just saw this other topic on using the Rad charger with an inverter (like what's inside the Jackery).  Topic: 12 volt accessory adapter charging  (Read 30 times)

The Jackery is 200 watts continuous/400 watts peak. It will be interesting based on the experience of these other folks to see if that is enough for the charger. I'm not sure why the other people had issues. The 120 watts on AC that is specified and written on the charger is less than the inverters he was trying.

I would be concerned about potentially hitting the cable/plug where it plugs into the battery with my leg or knee while pedaling. You could end up damaging the jack on the battery if that happened. I'm also not sure how much actual additional ride time that might give you. Using the standard charger the battery charges pretty slow and takes a long time. I think in most cases you're going to be using a lot more power than would be replaced by this. Check your display on the bike when you are riding as you normally do to see how many watts it is using. Even on pedal assist level 1 you will use more than this is providing. This Jackery has a 240 watt hour battery. The Rad charger draws 120 watts from the AC power and provides 96 watts output charging (48v x 2 amps). There also is some energy lost as well inside the Jackery converting from the DC battery to the AC for the power outlet. Based on this, it looks like the Jackery would only be charging for about 2 hours or less. If you already own the Jackery, you could try using it to charge your Rad battery (not while riding) from zero and see how much it actually charges the battery. That would give you a very rough estimate of how much extra battery you might actually get. If you don't already own the Jackery, it may not be worth it just for this application. You'd probably be better off putting the cost of this toward a second Rad battery. it sucks that they are so expensive though.

I noticed your seat too. How do you like it?

September 10, 2021, 07:11:28 AM
I'm kind of lucky because my wife has a Rover too, but she never goes with me on my long rides. So, I take her battery with me when I go farther than 25 miles. I wouldn't mind just having a second battery too, but I want to be able to swap it out vs. running in parallel or adding another mount. The Rad batteries are so expensive. I'd almost rather buy a whole second bike instead and have all the other spare parts.  :)

I wish there was a less expensive aftermarket battery that plugged right into the standard Rad mount/connector. I search pretty extensively. Has anyone else found one?

Those look like they might be alright. The reviews on Amazon for them look good. They seem to be a little higher cost than many of the other options out there. How long did your original ones that came on the bike last? The original Kenda Juggernauts from Rad are only $49 each. I think if I was going to go with a knobby tread pattern again, I might just get the Kenda's again from Rad.

I have about 700 miles on my RadRover 5. It's all on paved surfaces and the the original tires are starting to wear. So, I purchased a set of Origin8 Supercell Tires 26x4.0 Black 30 TPI to have ready. These are totally different than the original tires. They are more of a street tire. All the feedback and reviews I found for them were pretty good and most people say they are significantly quieter. I haven't installed them yet. I purchased them from Bell's Bike Shop on Google Shopping (Bell's Bike Shop is also on Ebay). Shipping was free. It cost me $133.50 for the pair.

As a side note, I also have the Tannus Armour inserts installed currently. I purchased these from Rad directly because they happened to be in stock and were pretty much the same price. I plan on using them with the Origin8 tires too when I swap them. If you're concerned about getting a flat, I would recommend these. I would recommend getting them to install with your new tires, that way you only have to take the wheels off once to install both.

Rad Modifications / Rear view camera
July 14, 2021, 10:38:03 AM
I wanted a way to see behind me better while I was riding. I tried a helmet mirror, but that didn't work for me. I also tried a mirror on my handlebars, but I had to lean to the side to see past myself. I have a mirror on the end of the handle grip now and that's better, but still not exactly what I wanted. I also tried a cheap GoPro type camera mounted on the rear of my bike that connected via Wi-Fi to my phone mounted on my handlebars. The problem with that was the image was in reverse and I also could use my maps on my phone at the same time. Then, a couple of weeks ago I found this.

https://amzn.to/3zx2xGW

I mounted the camera to back of the rack on my RadRover. The screen is nice because it has it's own rechargeable battery. I can also plug that into the Rav battery to charge if I ever need to. It's supposed to last 4 -5 hours on a charge. I've only tried it for an hour so far and it still seemed to be pretty full.

I also added this to address the lack of available space to mount more things on my handlebars (like this screen).
