General Chat / Re: Rad Power Bikes New Model Discussion 2024
« on: March 06, 2024, 10:44:13 AM »
Oh, hey - RadWagon now with 20" x 3.3" tires, instead of the oddball 22".

Yep, I posted this a few days ago. I?ll paste it here.

??Looks like the Wagon got rid of those nightmare proprietary 22inch wheels. Down to 20inch from the looks of it. Thats good news however anyone with the old model is going to have an even harder time finding tires. (Lesson: Never buy a bike with a  proprietary wheel diameter) ??

Notice they only say ?more stable ride? they don?t say the truth which should be something like ? 22inch wheels were are royal pain and a daft idea to begin with so buy as many replacement tires now as there won?t be any in the near future ;)

I have doubts about the rear rack on the Radsters.

They say they're "Integrated, 55 lb (25 kg) carrying capacity", but they don't look like they have much (or any) bracing against fore & aft movement. Not like the RadWagon and RadRunner models.
There should be something like a bar going to the seat tube.

Now, with "Full coverage aluminum alloy fenders ...", is the rear fender supposed to be rigid enough to provide that bracing?

Looks like it?s mounted to the fender for fore and aft stability. WHICH IS REALLY DUMB :) Whoa, no good for a real load.

The newer (2020) Rads have the power cable on the none chain side. This makes removal easy with the proper tool.

Which side is yours on?

General Chat / Re: master links
« on: October 10, 2023, 03:58:57 PM »
Most every replacement chain now days comes with a master link.

Prebuilt bikes often do not.

SRAM, KMC, Whipperman-Connix make good chains.

Back in the day, it seemed like all bikes big enough to have pneumatic tires also came with master links. I wonder what changed.

Maybe on single speed bikes but certainly not 10spds of the time. Only recently (last 10 years) has the industry started to move twords master links for geared chains. The locking sleeve made the master link wider and that would jam the cogs. Now the master links are narrow like the rest of the chain. (Single speed chain quick links are still wider)

Still available. $40 free ship

Should also be said that the best rust protection is a properly maintained chain. Lube it every 2 weeks in the winter and once a month in the summer ?1 drop of quality chain lube per link , then wipe off the side plates.

Do not use motor oil, or anything from the kitchen or sewing machine.

A Sram PC-830 should do it. They have 114 links but any bike shop will have extra or better yet, just have them install it. (114 could also be enough)

Your far better off packing a fully charged 2nd or 3rd battery than amending 1 battery with the pack weight, set up and unpredictable efficiency of a solar panel and charge controller.

General Chat / Re: Is it safe to use 20 x 2.75/3.00/3.25 tubes ?
« on: September 09, 2023, 09:31:37 PM »
The problem with and undersized tube is will be paper thin when inflated enough for what you wide tire is asking for.

Also the area around the valve stem will be even narrower when overinflated. (Doesn?t stretch as far around the stem area) Feel the side wall of your tire around the where the valve is and you might notice a difference compared to the ready of the overall tire when fully inflated.

General Chat / CST Big Boat- 2000 mile review
« on: September 09, 2023, 09:37:49 AM »
I commute to work 20 miles one way and 20Mi back so after two summers and one winter on the tire 2000Mi is conservative. I?m sure it?s much higher since I ride around on my days off as well. Anyway, 2000Mi is impressive for this tire. I run full 30psi for maximum efficiency and use FlatOut goop which saved my bacon several times with HUGE nails and a roofing staple. I can?t recommend Flat Out enough.

So as you can see I finally had to replace the tire since it?s getting quite bald. I?m sure it has a few 100 miles left in it but I?m not going to press my luck with easy punctures with such wear and tear.

Great tires for pavement urban use.
