General Chat / Trike Ride Normally This "Lurc...
Last post by RicoWarner24 - Today at 12:37:14 PM
Hi there -

New trike owner and love it but wondering if it is operating normally. Maybe just me not knowing how eBikes work...?

What I expected: choose level from 1-5 and get smooth additional power to supplement my pedaling, up to the speed cutoff for that level's max speed. Then, after cutoff, additional speed just from my pedaling.

What I have: no perceived additional support to my pedaling, regardless of level chosen. ...Unless I nearly turn throttle all the way...then, after about 3sec delay it lurches in and starts accelerating me toward 14mph.

When I let off the throttle even a tiny bit, it totally cuts out and it starts me coasting back down to the speed of me fully powering the bike with my pedaling.

So, I *can* use the bike, but it is not a smooth ride. It is lurchy that way with me going back and forth between fully pedal-powered and lurching toward 14mph for a short stretch, only to coast back down.

Is this normal performance, or how to fix it? The bike shop who assembled it has issues, and so I don't feel comfortable going back to it.

Thanks in advance for any troubleshooting info, if needed.

Service & Repair / Radtrike Tire Tread glued down...
Last post by griefninja - Today at 05:53:13 AM
I have owned two radtrike bikes. The first had an electrical issue and needed to be exchanged. Both bikes have had all three treads stuck on one side. It's as if the bead is glued in place. I have literally cut the rest of the tread away to look at it from the inside and nothing looks out of place, like obvious glue or some kind of mechanism like a clamp or anything. I need to change the thread because it's starting to wear out, but I can't when it's stuck like this. Has anyone else had this problem or something like it? Customer service keeps telling me they'll call me back and then never do. This is my only way to get to work and I am kind of worried. Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Quote from: Count on December 03, 2024, 07:55:35 PMHello forum, I was posting here at least 5 years ago. Much has changed I can see. I have a Rad Rover circa 2018, and did a lot of upgrading. I installed, among many other things, a Bolton 35 amp controller and screen. My bike sat in the garage for years, and I want to revive it, and the controller is problematic. I see that Bolton is no longer around.  Can you please let me know where I can purchase an equivalent plug and play 35 amp controller for  my bike?  Also, is there a better plug and play replacement available in the market these days, and if so, can you please let me know?  I have a true 750 baffang motor if that helps.  Thanks!

Bolton is now Area 13, And is still in Grass Valley Calif. They recently opened up a new store, Kyle is still running things,

Looking to replace the stock suspension fork on a RadRunner Plus with a stock stiff fork from a RadRunner 2. Wondering if they're fully compatible?

Quote from: Tbery on October 27, 2024, 08:06:46 AMYeah, I've nicknamed my bike buyer's remorse. The controller issue which renders the lights unusable; they sent me a replacement controller but it has failed again in less than 6mo. The magnetic disc snapped, looked like when Rad delivered it fully assembled they put it on backwards and the old design had indentations on one side that got caught causing it to snap.

It's funny... every issue Tbery noted, I've had with my bike.  My rear tire exploded (sidewall blew out) due to the tire defect.  Tone wheel broke.  Controller went bad.  Headlight went bad. Bottom bracket, freewheel died and I learned of the joys of the ultrathin, readily breakable removal tool. My front hub bearings just gave up the ghost today and after some painful searching I've located some aftermarket bearing cones to replace the spent old ones and freshen up the hub with new balls.

I've done all the work on my bike and as you said, if you send the bike to Rad (if practical) it would take forever and be expensive... and if you send it to your LBS they're unlikely to have the patience or experience to deal with the quirky costed down Rad parts.

On the whole, the bike has been OK and I've got ~ 5500 miles on mine to date.  What mainly annoys me is that they used custom (and shitty) components that aren't easily upgraded to a nicer, semi standard Shimano equivalent.  The bottom bracket appears to be unobtanium from anywhere but Rad.  There appears to be only one available freewheel, and it's quality is lacking.  Rad certainly hit a low price point but they essentially designed a throwaway bike, and not one easily maintained.

How To Information / Re: did you use a torque wrenc...

Yes I used a torque wrench. I figured that I had spent over $4000 dollars on two bicycles, I might as well spend another $30 to buy a 1/4" torque wrench and put them together properly to protect my investment.

Rad Power Bikes Classifieds / Battery replacement
Last post by bprojects - November 29, 2024, 07:58:07 AM
I have an early Rad Runner plus with a dead battery, The battery is the original model of the current Safe Shield™ Advanced External Battery.

Does anyone have a battery to sell (there is a current RAD promotion offering an extra battery with purchase of a new bike; this is a savings opportunity for us both)

Or can anyone recommend where I can get mine repaired?
