General Chat / Re: Battery lock
December 16, 2020, 08:44:20 PM
With all the etsy type innovation I'm surprised no one has come up with a battery lock system. The saveyourseatlock system would be great unless you have to remove the battery everyday to charge it. I though about trying a motorcycle disc lock under the seat clamp on the seat tube, to inhibit the space required to remove he battery. I still use a bmx style seat clamp with a HexLox, so my seat clamp will not be removed without a major hassle! If someone figures out a good system to secure the battery please share it. I generally don't worry about my battery getting taken but as ebike popularity increases I feel the theft of batteries will.

RadRunner / Re: Upgrade display for RadRunner 1....
December 13, 2020, 05:01:25 PM
So I got my upgrade display and installed it, but its raining. In the mean time I set the wheel size to 20" , increased the top speed to 40 kph, set the back light to 1 and selected mph for my speed reading. I'm more concerned about accuracy of the odometer over top speed but I read something about setting the display for 22"s? I might mess around with it while on my commute and see if it is truly restricted or not.

I slipped out of work for a secret mission and got a flat tire on my RadRunner 1! the dreaded "F" word! I had to run to Wally Mart to grab a Scabs patch kit (I normally carry one but left it out of my trunk) that included some cheap tire levers. It took me a total of 45 minutes total to patch the tube and put the bike back together. And this was in a lab on a padded floor with compressed air at my disposal. The smallest/sharpest piece of metal is what got me! Oh, and one of the cheap tire levers snapped. Time for quality tire levers and some Mr. Tuffy Tan tire liners!

RadRunner / Upgrade display for RadRunner 1....
December 06, 2020, 08:28:56 PM
I'm tired of everyone asking me how many miles I have on my ebike, how far I've ridden in a day and more technical questions about power being used. I broke down and ordered the upgraded display for my RadRunner 1. As usual, 2 inner tubes (in stock) and the display was $25 to ship but I guess I gotta pay to play. It would be so nice if I hooked up the new display and all my prior miles were magically stored and somehow displayed but reality is it will start at zero miles.

When you say mini do you mean mini as the smallest U-lock in the family or a disc-lock that's used on motorcycle wheel disc? I have the Faghettaboutit noose chain that loops over itself rotting on my front steps because I'm determined to find the key to the rusty U-lock that I locked my cheap motor scooter with when left out front. I have a ABUS next size up from their version of a mini U-lock (nice German made one) that I could compare if its close in size. Honestly, there is no such thing as to many U-locks. Lock your ebike in your garage! Heck, the inside of your house as well. Thieves love the privacy of a nice enclosed garage once their in! I have a Pedego branded FoldyLock for my ebike. Also have various U-locks from my motorcycle and scooter days.

General Chat / Re: Rad Battery Jacket

I got Lopoo leg gators, size Large, thru Amazon. $16.98 . Here's what I do. I cut off the boot base straps and top straps and wrap both over the battery. They cover the battery and stay outta the way when installed. I figure using both will keep my battery from cold weather exposure. Obviously the bottom is open and the top may collect a bit of water if I ride in heavy rain. Don't worry, that will get tested one day. It takes me 10 seconds to wrap my battery with both of the gators, and their not to thick so they don't hog valuable space in my trunk. Wish I was picture savvy but Mr. Galaxy 3 hates these modern phones, but I may treat myself to some modern tech this season. The gators don't look tacky installed. Not sure how well they actually protect my battery from the cold as the coldest I've ridden so far has been 34 degrees but I only used 2 bars when the last time I rode in the same weather without the gators I used 4 bars. I usually put my battery on my bike 15 minutes before leaving, stays indoors when off the bike.

Update. The Milwaukee heated gloves run large. I ordered Medium and their still slightly baggy but not unsafe. The coldest its gotten so far has been 34 degrees, wimpy weather compared to our northern riders. So at 34 degrees at 1 hour of riding with the gloves on high my hands never got cold, but also never felt toasty. Its a weird thing to describe but they seem to work. They don't bunch up, easy to get on and off (have pull loops) and the gauntlets fit over my jacket sleeves without catching anything. Batteries are easy to get to and you can actually charge them while still in the gloves. Let me ride in colder weather and get some more miles on them before giving them a great overall review, but so far I like them. Price ($180) is still steep.
Note that the gloves run a bit over a hour and a half on max heat. I have no idea why they have a medium and low setting but they do. The batteries take a tad over a hour to charge and you can charge both at the same time. All the hardware seems pretty robust as well, but time will tell.

General Chat / Re: Considering a rad wagon
December 03, 2020, 08:23:04 PM
You sound like me! Here's why. I have a scooter as my main transportation. I put around 10,000 a year on my 2019 Piaggio Liberty 150. Also had a 98 Yamaha Zuma but gave it to a friend because it never got ridden. I was the same as you about an ebike but my commute is 14 miles each way. I started with a Pedego my wife bought me and ended up selling it and buying a RadRunner. Now the Liberty hasn't been ridden much lately and I'm thinking of selling it. The RadRunner is the perfect ebike for me. I have no urge to modify it to go faster or anything like that. If that time comes I'll just buy something more powerful and faster. So far the Juiced Hyper Scorpion is tempting. I have around 1500 trouble free miles on the RadRunner and its been very reliable and I don't take great care of it. Go down curbs, ride in the rain and its grubby. I have a SHAD 34 liter motorcycle trunk on it (stolen from my Zuma), mirrors on both sides and fenders (mine is a RadRunner 1). And how old school for a scooter/moped? I hate messing with older (90's and down) gas powered scooters because the 10% ethanol gas is causing chaos in the carburetors. Fuel injection is the only way to go nowadays. I just like the ebikes so much more.

I can confirm the SaveYourSeatLock blocks the removal of the battery on a RadRunner 1. Its a fair price and the quality is very nice. I don't use it though because I pull my battery at work and don't worry about ibattery theft while out and about. I went with a HexLox and a bmx seat clamp to keep my seat from getting seat-napped. If you charge your battery on the bike the SaveYourSeat clamp may be a great solution.

General Chat / Re: Rad Battery Jacket

I'm going a slightly different route with a battery cover on my RadRunner 1. I ordered calf supports/wraps for my battery as a test. Made for hikers they are insulated as well. I'm pretty sure I ordered the correct size after measuring everything. I have to be able get my hand under the battery to push it up in order to remove it, so I figure if I can completely remove the wrap it would be easier. I'll see how well my $20 experiment works when the calf wraps (2 per pack) arrive. I do like those purpose made ones though.

I asked the guy I got the Ruckus from and he said Slipstreamer Scoot series. The one he had bolted to the handlebars, and I remember the clamps having 22.2 stamped on them. I looked online now and all I can find is the mirror stalk mounting options. That Slipstreamer was nice quality. Didn't flex or chatter at 45mph and never did anything while being jumped over railroad tracks. Just gotta find one with handlebar mounts.

The Cycle Gear balaclava was $30. Covers everything but my nose. Under a full face motorcycle helmet that's fine but I'll soon see how my nose does come the colder weather with a bicycle helmet. REI Co-Op had some nice face cover solutions as well but Covid kinda limits you putting one on for a test fit. I've used Cycle Gear Freeze Out stuff for years on my scooter. Good stuff at a fair price and I know it fits me. Still intrigued with the REI options as well.

The M12 gloves (in the heated apparel section) are $179. I firmly believe in the Pay to Play ethos BUT Home Depoo only keeps L and XL in stock, and I wear medium. So I did some online price checking and $179 is the norm. Going back in the morning and order the medium size thru my local store. I also checked LOWES and Northern and neither one stocks heated clothing. Also checked T.S.C. and they don't carry heated clothing either. Will post my results/mini-review when I get my heated gloves and get some miles on them. I also stopped by Cycle Gear and picked up another Freeze-Out Balaclava. Fits under my Nutcase helmet and keeps my head warm. Might also order one of those battery jackets that's for sale on Etsy. I see they sell insulated ones.

Going to Home Depoo for the M12 heated gloves. I have weird sized hands and I need to try on gloves before purchasing. I also loose stuff...  But thanks for the link to the other brand Altema.

General Chat / Winter is starting! Cold hand solutions?
November 19, 2020, 09:08:03 PM
I'm trying to ride year round but winter is slowly starting here. I normally have good luck with cheap hunting gloves with liners on my scooter, but the same gloves get cold on my ebike after 40 minutes. It takes 30 minutes on the scooter for my commute, but takes a hour on the ebike. I finally bought warm, water proof shoes, have a warm jacket and a liner for my helmet but my hands still get so cold! Anyone find warm gloves? Battery powered gloves? I don't care for bar muffs and heated grips never get hot enough. So what do you year round cold weather riders use?
