Title: Security skewers / axles - advice needed!
Post by: yellowdirt on June 19, 2020, 11:36:54 AM
With a lot of bike theft in London, I was concerned about how easy it is to take the wheels off my RadRunner with those quick release skewers You see a lot of bikes missing wheels, or random wheels, locked - where the rest of the bike has been stolen  :-[

I came across the below, which have security keys and the axles go up to 140mm on the front wheel and 180mm on the rear wheel. With the fatter tires on the RadRunner and motor on the rear wheel - it makes it a bit more complicated...  ???

I really don't know much about bikes in terms of how to compare the necessary lengths, but do you think that these be suitable for a RadRunner, given that you've got fat tires and the motor on the rear wheel?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers in advance!

Chris

The front dropouts are 135mm which I believe is typically standard for the rear of a normal bike. So that is the size I'd look for.

I've also seen positive feedback from folks buying these locking skewers for their Rad: https://amzn.to/2Br3ckt (https://amzn.to/2Br3ckt)

No experience myself, but I hope this helps! The Pitlock ones look a little higher quality.

Hello, Yellowdirt. I have a RadRover and not a RadRunner, so I can't be sure about your model of eBike, but let me point out that security skewers are only for replacing the existing quick-release skewers. The RadRover only has a set of quick-release skewers on the front wheel and the seat post. If the RadRunner follows suit, its rear wheel uses a thicker bolt and nut for the axel, and not a quick-release skewer, so the rear wheel would not be a candidate for a security skewer. There may be a different security arrangement system for the rear wheel that you can purchase, but having a bolt and nut arrangement is already a deterrent to the casual bicycle thief.

I need to get a security skewer for the front tire on my radmini stepthru 2. Rad support let me know that i would need to look for a security skewer that is 135mm long. The as delivered quick release version has a 9mm quick release. Has anyone added a security skewer to their rad mini and felt satisfied with the fir and function?
