I have seen the thumb throttles before but there are some interesting additions here! Anyone else 3D printing parts? Similar to the GoPro mount it would be awesome to have it wrap around the side and have holes for standard water bottle cages similar to what MRI-Denver sells (only cheaper).

A lot of folks wonder how it is possible to use a child trailer with Rads. While every trailer is slightly different I wanted to create a thread where folks can share what they've done to attach trailers. Here is how the trailer I have connects. It's a clamp style so I opted to cut custom running boards on my RadWagon and saved the stock ones in case I want to use them again. While I wouldn't want to put a ton of weight in the back it seems to be holding up just fine so far. See pictures below

I thought it would be good to have an easy to consume list of all commonly recommended accessories for Rad Power Bikes. In some cases these are Amazon links to the same products Rad sells directly on their website as accessories and in other cases they are alternative options for accessories. If you have something you love on your Rad please share it below. Note where applicable these are affiliate links which help support the maintenance of this site. General Chat / The minivan of ebikes: My RadWagon
June 23, 2019, 08:30:50 PM
It wasn't hard to decide that we would get the most use out of the Wagon compared to the Mini, City or Rover. From trips that often include two adults to hauling whatever needs to be hauled, there really isn't much I can think of where I'd really need to use a car. I'm a landlord and have strapped a heavy extension ladder to the back and my most recent trip included large boxes of popcorn (pictured). Two strapped to the back with the help of some cross supports, rope and bike tubes. The third we broke up and put the individual bags in the child carrier. Such a blast and a joy to ride around whole hopefully setting a good example of what is possible.

I thought it might be fun to share a photo once you have hit a mile milestone on your Rad. Bonus if you catch it as it rolls over and stop to snap a picture.

I imagine we will have some awesome pictures from national/state parks and others who are stacking up the miles via commuting. Here is our unimpressive photo taken at our gym, though I do like the contrast with the cars [emoji3]

At around 3,000 miles I think our 2018 Rad Wagon will have paid for itself.

Feel free to start your own thread or jump in below.

General Chat / May 2019 Picture Thread

We're well into May at this point but we finally are getting some nice weather here in Wisconsin. We've been cruising around to garage sales to get some fresh air and my wife is using the bike for daily commuting. We just surpassed 1900 miles on our Rad Wagon. Our two modifications, a mirror and our cell phone holder have been great additions this year (I've created threads on each).

Here is my wife holding a free baby swing we picked up on the back of our Wagon. We're expecting our first child this fall!

After getting our Rad Wagon last year we made only a few modifications such as adding battery powered colored lights, modifying the running boards for a bike trailer and using bungee cords to affix a rear basket. There are generally a few popular modifications I see people make initially, usually adding a more comfortable seat () and if they're really serious about comfort a suspension seatpost ().

I'd argue one of the most important modifications to make to your ebike initially have to do with safety. Beyond gear to be seen (we wear safety vests), more lights are always a good add-on but mirrors are also important. Many mirrors will fit your Rad, but the is one of the most popular.

It can be purchased for around $10 and is extremely easy to install as I recently found out. A few pieces to screw together, pop off the end cap on your bike, put the mirror into the handlebar and finally tighten. It comes with all of the tools you need in the box. There are probably some other options which look a bit sleeker but we're really happy with the Mirrycle. See below for the pictures of it installed.

I'm curious what the consensus is on getting your ebike insured. I imagine for folks in bigger cities it's a no brainer. I've also heard that some people are covered by their home insurance policies. My estimate was $9 per month through Velosurance to get our Rad Power Bike insured which I didn't think was too bad.

We take some easy steps like using a decent lock, but there are lots of other things you can do such as removing the battery completely (we just put ours in the lock position) or getting a motion alarm. We live in a smaller city and we never leave our bike at night and we always lock it up in areas where there are cameras. Most often it is parked for less than an hour.

What are other forum members' thoughts on this?

I see a lot of people asking about a clicking sound on the Rad bikes. This too happened on my 2018 Rad Wagon and it was coming from the rear wheel and was due to loose spokes. This was more noticeable when the bike had a lot of weight on it. While you can always take this to the bike shop I recommend buying your own spoke wrench since they are incredibly cheap and it is easy to tighten them. You'll also have the tool for any adjustments you need to make down the road. Remember to tighten them it will opposite to righty tighty, lefty loosey - assuming you're looking at them top down. I went around every spoke to feel how tight they were and made minor adjustments to each and then took it for a test ride. Rinse and repeat until the sound stops!

All Rad Bikes have 12 gauge spokes. You'll want to buy the Park Tool SW-3 which fits nipple size .156" or 3.96MM (higher quality, more expensive option). They are offered in packs or individually.

Park Tool combo pack spoke tool set: SW-0 SW-1 SW-2 SW-3

Alternatively you can buy one which has six sizes in one. This is the one I actually purchased and it worked just fine:

Another option is the Crankbrothers M19 which has multiple tools including allen wrenches as well as a spoke tool:

It's still frozen here, but let's see some pictures of those actually out on their Rads  8)

I was in Arizona the other week and saw someone riding a Mini, but didn't get a chance to snap a photo.

General Chat / New Rad Power Bikes Pricing (tariffs)
January 31, 2019, 07:34:40 PM
Back in August 2018 Rad Power Bikes announced that they were going to have to increase prices across their ebikes by $200 due to tariffs on electric bikes. They shared that they were eating some of the cost, but consumers were going to have to pay more as well. At the time I was happy I had purchased my bike earlier in the year to save the additional money. Today, the company announced that they were absorbing 100% of the tariffs and returning to their original pricing. They are also refunding customers the difference who purchased their ebikes already in 2019. It's great to see them still be able to deliver such a quality product at that price point.

Rad Power Bikes shared a little bit how they were able to achieve this in the below video and on their website: https://bit.ly/3cBMYlB

I saw this video and thought it was pretty cool. It's a guy in Chicago delivering UberEats with a RadRover. Looks like he's got a pretty nice setup with a rear bag that holds food and drinks. I imagine this is far more profitable when you're doing it on an electric bike compared to a car in bigger cities. At the end he shows he made $140 for around 7 hours of work. Enjoy!

Rad recommends that the lithium battery be stored at around 50% capacity. Our Wagon battery wasn't completely full but still had 5 bars when we stopped riding it early November. I'm now trying to (slowly) discharge the battery by using it to charge other devices around the house. I imagine this will take quite some time but there has to be another way. I don't want to ride it outside since there is salt on our roads but perhaps that is my best option. We will see how this experiment goes [emoji3]

General Chat / Cell Phone Holder for Rad
December 22, 2018, 09:19:54 AM
Does anyone have strong opinions on a specific handlebar mount for a smartphone? I saw the one Rad promotes (https://bit.ly/2z743Gj) is $59 and there are tons of options on Amazon. Is the RAM worth the extra cost?

General Chat / Thoughts on Rad Power Bikes Front Baskets
December 18, 2018, 06:51:50 AM
As I've been staring at my bike in our family room (it's winter here in Wisconsin) I've been thinking about what I might want to add as far as accessories next year. The front baskets come to mind but they come at a steep price. Typically we use a rear basket when we need to haul things. Curious what those who have the front baskets think.

Rad Modifications / Cargo Rack Add-ons for the Rad Wagon
December 06, 2018, 10:00:18 AM
Our most often used accessory for our Rad Wagon has been a crate with holes. It holds well with just two or three bungee cords and still allows a passenger on the back. Typically we put a tarp underneath to protect the wood deck which could also serve as a bike cover in an emergency. In one of the pictures below we managed to find a cooler that fits perfectly into the crate which we use for grocery shopping or packing a picnic lunch. When we're really hauling a lot, we use a backpack and a messenger bag in addition to the crate which sit nicely on the running boards (no need real pannier bags, at least for us). We use a rope to attach the handles which holds them in place.

Curious to what others use with their Rad Wagon.

General Chat / Discuss 2019 Rad Power Bike Models
December 05, 2018, 04:44:20 PM
Last year when I saw the changes coming to the 2018 Rad Wagon I knew it was worth the wait to get the 2018 versus the 2017. I do like some of the changes coming to 2019, mainly the new tire liners and moving down to just a 7-speed (at least for us). As a 2018 owner I am very glad they kept the same battery and I expect they will make more significant changes in 2020.

One of the concerns I had when we bought our Rad Wagon was warranty and repair. Before we purchased I did a lot of reading of those who had to work with Rad for a warranty repair and they were all positive experiences. Over the summer I was going through the bike and noticed one of the bolts attaching the rear disc brake to the motor wouldn't tighten. Since it screws directly into the motor there isn't anything you can do outside of replacing the entire wheel. I contacted Rad who asked for a video which I sent along. They promptly sent me a replacement wheel under warranty.

Spring 2019 we'll be coming up on the one year mark which means anything else that goes wrong will be out of pocket, but the nice thing is that I'll be able to purchase any individual parts. Still cheaper than car ownership!
