Rad Modifications / Re: Different wheels/tires for RW4?
December 16, 2021, 09:44:27 PM
I did a bit more looking at wheel and tire options today and noticed the RadRunner Plus has the same size drop outs front and rear as the RW4. I think I am going to contact Rad to see what the price for a set of wheels and tires would be for the RadRunner Plus.
It might be worth it to look at buying them instead of trying to get some wheels, make sure they can handle the weight, getting new spokes and then lacing up the wheel etc.
Veggyhed, I also hope you are right about Rad going to 20 inch wheels for the RW4. They went from 26" wheels on the original RW's down to 22 in order to lower the centre of gravity and make the cargo bike handle a bit better. Maybe going to 20 inch wheels might do the same?

General Chat / Re: Foot boards

I don't know how to find new ones. However, they are bamboo, I believe, and the cheapest way to get new ones would be to buy correctly sized bamboo cutting boards and make them out of that. I'm waiting for my new floorboards to arrive so I don't actually know what size they are though, so take what I've suggested with a grain of salt.

RadRunner / Re: Wheel size in display settings
December 14, 2021, 10:27:55 AM
The Radwagon 4 is the only Rad with 22 inch tires. Apparently the controller will compensate or figure out the total diameter of the tire/wheel combination if one enters the correct wheel size. The only caveat is if one is using different tires from the stock tire size as the overall diameter can be affected. Unless one was using a 1.25 inch tire verses a 3 inch tire I'm not sure if the small difference in diameter will matter much as 20 mph verses 19 or 21 won't really be noticeable anyway.

Rad Modifications / Different wheels/tires for RW4?
December 06, 2021, 02:13:50 PM
I own a RadWagon 4 and am looking into using alternative wheels/tires as the current tires are: 1) custom sized at 22" 2) difficult to get 3) tubes are also difficult to get 4) an alternate tire tread is not available for common things such as winter riding, loose gravel/sand or even a small amount of mud.
Yes I'm investigating getting some tire chains from Slipknot but the tire chains don't necessarily work for gravel/sand and mud. My old fat bike was wonderful on any type of terrain with it's knobby tires!
Have any RW4 owners tried alternate tire sizes? For example 20" tires and wheels? I know tires and wheels larger than 22" won't work as there's not enough room. The fork spacing is 5" so it looks like it will comfortably accept 4" or maybe even 4.25" wide tires. Especially if the tires are slightly smaller in diameter than the 22" tires the RW4 currently has.
I have looked at the Rad site and it looks like the RadRunners and the RadMinis have 20" wheels and tires. The front dropouts are all the same size at 135mm while the rear dropouts are different. The rear dropouts are doable with spacers as the RW4 has a 175mm width. The RadRunner and RadMini are 167 and 170mm respectively.
However, if one could get the spokes and a rim for the rear wheel one could lace either the RW4 hub drive to the 20" wheel or a completely new hub drive to the wheel. Grin technologies has an excellent site where one can determine what length of spoke one would need and they can be ordered from them.
All of the bikes I've listed also use the same brake rotors, callipers and the same crank length so with the smaller diameter tires one doesn't even have to be concerned with parts compatibility or with clearance of the crank while riding.
Anyways, food for thought. Has anyone tried it yet?

RadWagon / Re: Battery lock
December 05, 2021, 10:44:25 AM
I bought the battery case in order to carry the battery around while I was off the bike. Unfortunately the case is too long to fit in the front basket and it's too long to carry my RW4 battery and be correctly balanced while carried by hand. It's awkward.
I was using one of those reusable grocery bags to protect the battery plugs while grocery shopping and the battery was in my cart. Since my large basket came in I see that the battery case comfortably fits inside it as well as inside the new large folding bag Rad sells so I can use the battery case for protection while shopping now.
It's still not a good solution if going somewhere, like for a quick coffee and one simply wants to leave their bike for three or four minutes (locked up of course.) Consequently when I get the time, the weather changes or we use the car I'm going to visit our locksmith to see if they can come up with a solution. I'm hoping they will be able to resolve the issue for me. I don't know much about locks but I've watched the Lockpickinglawyer on YouTube and understand a bit about how they are put together and come apart. Hopefully the locksmith can fix it or simply replace the cylinder with something else that actually needs a key instead of a blank.

General Chat / Re: Rad’s Repair Tool Kit?
December 04, 2021, 08:45:31 AM
SemperVee, nice tool kit. I recognize most of it but what's an Ouch Mouse? Or is it a Pouch Mouse? Also, what is the dark bag next to it?
I carry most of it but I don't currently have a bicycle multi tool and need one. I'm also looking into a standalone battery operated air pump instead of the CO2 containers I was originally going to use. It will take up about the same amount of space as two or more cylinders and the adapter (I hope) and not weigh too much.

RadCity / Re: Optimal Tire Pressure Radcity5 Plus
November 21, 2021, 08:35:58 AM
I know you are asking about the Radcity5 plus but my Radwagon4 has the same recommendation on the sidewall of the tires. When I got it last July I ran 30 lbs in the tires until I put a cushioned seat on it. It did fine and was more comfortable although I had only rode it on pavement up until the seat change. I run 50 lbs in the tires now and have ridden on rail trails and pavement and with 50 lbs in the tires I'm less concerned about getting a flat. For comforts sake you will be fine with lower tire pressure. Just be careful on where you ride so you minimize the chance of getting a flat.

Rad Modifications / Re: Studded tires for RadWagon 4??
November 13, 2021, 05:13:21 PM
I'm not sure which Radwagon you have but if it's the RW4 then you have 22 inch tires. Nobody makes a studded tire for them unfortunately. However, try www.slipkknottraction.com as they sell tire chains for the 22 inch tire for the RW4. Let them know exactly what you're looking for and they will make them for you. When I last checked they didn't have them listed on their website but they said they do make them and will post them soon.

General Chat / Re: Inside the Rad battery and BMS
November 12, 2021, 09:00:45 AM
This is an excellent thread. Thank you for posting it.
I especially like the referral to the cell balancing article as I'm a total novice to this kind of stuff but, like DickB and Altema, I like to know the how and why of how stuff works.
I've been following Rad since their start up and it's why I bought one of their bikes. Well made stuff for a reasonable price. Where I live bikes can start at $3000.00 but it's more common to see them listed for $4000.00 and higher. They use proprietary motors, parts etc. so you are stuck with them.

The seats make a huge difference in how a bike feels. In June and July when I first got it, my Radwagon 4 felt like I was riding a board when I had the original seat. I like the bike but OMG it was not fun riding it.
I used a Selle brand seat (I don't know what model) from an old bike I had and put it on the RW4. My seat has lots of padding, some gel on top and a set of rubber suspension pads/pucks under it so it has made a massive difference in comfort. it made it feel like a totally different bike. So much so that I'm no longer researching a suspension seat post.
It's been an excellent upgrade!

And yes, the Rad bikes are good value for their price!

RadWagon / Re: Spare battery transportation
October 20, 2021, 08:38:20 AM
I've never tried it but I saw, somewhere, one Radwagon 4 owner mounted their controller under the place where it's usually located. He/she then put their spare battery on the top surface where the controller used to be. According to them it fits snug so there was no issue with losing it.
As I've said, I haven't tried it but I am keeping it in mind if I ever want a second battery.

I had the same issue with my charger. Rad answered my email when I asked about it and they said "it is normal for the charger to get hot and uncomfortable to hold on to. Like the outside of a hot paper cup of coffee without the sleeve."
The only side that got really hot was the side it sits on while charging. What I've done is turn the charger on it's side while it's charging so it can shed some of the heat. It seems to work as I can hold it without a lot of discomfort.

RadWagon / Re: Radwagon 4 EU Max Speed
October 12, 2021, 01:31:28 PM
Today I tested the reprogramming for the top speed for my Radwagon 4 as I mentioned yesterday. The instructions for the modifications on the Rad Runner worked on my Rad 4 and I was able to achieve 38.5 kms. I couldn't get up to 40 Kms as I couldn't pedal fast enough (injury preventing me from moving my legs faster) and I didn't think to try with just the throttle.
I did note, however, that my watt output readings never went over 498 watts although it has hit 500 watts in the past. The temperature was 5C so maybe it had some effect?
The controller is a 17 amp controller so, somehow, the controller is limiting the wattage as 48 Volts times 17 amps gives 816 watts. Something in the controller is limiting the output wattage. Maybe that's how they are limiting the ebikes to EU standards of 250w, Canadian standards of 500w and American standards of 750w. Something in the controller is limiting not only the top speed but also the output wattage.

RadWagon / Re: Radwagon 4 EU Max Speed
October 11, 2021, 06:00:57 PM
I'm not sure about the EU max speed but here in Canada we are limited to 500W and 32 kms per hour. I have updated my max speed to 40 kms per hour as 32 was too slow. I haven't tested it yet as I only updated it today. I used the same instructions as someone posted on Youtube for their Rad Runner.
They had the same LCD display and controller buttons as I have on my Radwagon 4 so I thought, what the hell, it should work. If you watch the video and the display and controller buttons look like yours then give it a try.
I have no idea on how fast a Radwagon 4 would go without pedalling as I always pedal. Sorry, can't help you there.
