RadWagon / Suntour Suspension Seat Post
September 16, 2023, 08:12:35 AM
FWIW I just installed a 27.2 Suntour suspension seat post on my RW4. I used a 30.8 sleeve (the bike shop didn't have a 30.9 sleeve) for the 27.2 seat post and it's working fine. I've put about 30 or 40 kms on it and it is holding position. I'm not sure why Rad's web site says the Suntour seat post isn't for the RW4 as they simply need to have a few sleeves in stock.

It works excellently. Very enjoyable riding now.

General Chat / RW4 and 20 inch tires
August 11, 2023, 08:03:17 AM
I have a RW4 with the stock 22 inch tires. They are only available from Rad.  :(

Has anyone changed their tires to 20 inches such as the tires on the Radrunner? The weight rating of the Radrunner and the RW4 are the same, 350 pounds so there's no issues with the weight rating, payload etc. The tire width looks like it would fit.
When I wear out my RW4 tires I'm either going to get Shinko 241 moped tires or change to 20 inch tires so I don't have to rely on one tire supplier anymore.

FWIW I also see almost every two wheeled cargo bike is now designed with 20 inch tires. Hopefully Rad has a new RW in the works with 20 inch tires? RW5? RW4a?  ;D

General Chat / Question for Ryan
July 28, 2023, 07:49:43 AM
Hi Ryan,
I posted this a few days ago in the RW forum but you haven't seen it yet. Maybe you will see it here, I hope?

I have a RW4 and I see you do also. You tend to use the Hollywood bike rack on your vehicle don't you? I weighed my RW4 and, with the front basket, the large rear basket, the floorboards and the Ballard Cargo Bags my bike weighs 90 lbs. Naturally the weight is without the battery as I wouldn't transport my bike with it installed. Most bike racks are not designed to be used with such heavy bikes. How do you do it or what do you do to compensate for the weight?
We need a way to transport our bikes to and from various trails so we can enjoy the rides more often.

Thank you

Dave

Rad Modifications / RW4 and Ballard Cargo Bags
December 04, 2022, 10:32:18 AM
Has anyone mounted the large basket plus the Ballard Cargo Bags on the rear of their RW4? I received the bags yesterday and discovered they can't be put on the bike when the large basket is installed. I'm very disappointed as I would think Rad would/should have designed something to make it possible to use both items simultaneously. It is a cargo bike after all.
Once it warms up enough to work in my unheated garage I'm going to investigate some method of raising the basket so I can get the top hooks on the cargo frame. I wish Rad already had something designed so it could be done. If someone else has already done it could you share what you did?

RadWagon / Black Friday sale?
November 26, 2022, 09:47:32 AM
On a whim, and Black Friday is coming up, I logged onto the Canadian Rad site to see what was for sale, out of stock etc. I just bought two of the Ballard cargo bags for my RW4 as they are on sale. I've been looking for cargo bags for my RW since I bought it last year and they've never been on sale. I'm happy.  :)

RadWagon / Pinhead order arrived
April 23, 2022, 01:12:40 PM
At the beginning of April I ordered some stuff from Pinhead for my RW4. It arrived the other day and I've put most of it on my bike. I hope the information below is informative and helps others to make good choices when deciding on what, if anything, they want to order.

I received the QR replacement for the front axle (165 mm), two M12 axle nuts for the rear, a headset setup for the fork/steering tube, two seat post clamps, a 34.9 mm and a 30 mm one, and two Pinhead "keys".

I've installed the front QR replacement but only one of the axle nuts sent for the rear hub motor. The axle nuts are M12 (at least I hope both sides are. My 18 mm wrench fits on both sides so I think so) but they are too small to fit over the power cable connection so only one nut is installed. However it appears to be reasonably secure anyway due to the difficulty of removing the rear wheel. Maybe I'll take a look at it this winter as I may have to remove the connection, put the nut in place and then re solder the connection back on.

The steering head is already more secure than I thought. The handlebars are held on with two hex bolts. When I loosened them in order to have access to the steerer/fork bolt I couldn't get the handlebars off the bike. Thus I left it in place and used the headset bolt and fitting on my partners bike to secure her handlebars.

I didn't need to order a 30 mm seat post clamp. I needed to order a 40 mm seat post clamp along with the 34.9 one. That was totally my mistake. The 34.9 seat post clamp works perfectly on the upper seat post and Pinhead is sending me a bolt I can use for the 40 mm seat post clamp on the bottom. They are also going to let me know when they have 40 mm seat post clamps available as they said the manufacturing of them has been held up in la-la land since October. I was able to use the 30 mm seat post clamp on my partners bike to secure her seat so it's all good.

I like the way Pinhead has dealt with me and my order. I'm definitely going to order the QR replacements for my partners bike when we are ready for it. She has a QR front and rear so she definitely needs something to make them a bit more secure.

I know nothing is fool proof but every little bit helps. My next step will be to order some of the Pitlock stuff to add a bit of security to the bikes, the add ons or accessories.

RadWagon / Axle size
April 04, 2022, 10:54:38 AM
My rear hub drive has an 18 mm axle nut. What is the size of the actual axle? Is the replacement nut an M9 or an M12 as my axle looks like it's about 13 mm across (measured with a tape and while the nut was still on the axle unfortunately.)?

I need to find out as I am going to purchase a Pinhead security system for the quick release for the front axle, the rear solid axle nuts as well as for the seat posts etc. I don't want to order the wrong things.

RadWagon / RW4 Rad Mitts
March 04, 2022, 02:37:13 PM
Since I got them the Rad Mitts have been very good. However it's warm enough to take them off now. They will be waiting for next winter when I can use them for the entire season. They don't fit perfectly with the mirror and my jacket needed to be tighter around the wrists but overall they have been an excellent addition.

Rad Modifications / Different wheels/tires for RW4?
December 06, 2021, 02:13:50 PM
I own a RadWagon 4 and am looking into using alternative wheels/tires as the current tires are: 1) custom sized at 22" 2) difficult to get 3) tubes are also difficult to get 4) an alternate tire tread is not available for common things such as winter riding, loose gravel/sand or even a small amount of mud.
Yes I'm investigating getting some tire chains from Slipknot but the tire chains don't necessarily work for gravel/sand and mud. My old fat bike was wonderful on any type of terrain with it's knobby tires!
Have any RW4 owners tried alternate tire sizes? For example 20" tires and wheels? I know tires and wheels larger than 22" won't work as there's not enough room. The fork spacing is 5" so it looks like it will comfortably accept 4" or maybe even 4.25" wide tires. Especially if the tires are slightly smaller in diameter than the 22" tires the RW4 currently has.
I have looked at the Rad site and it looks like the RadRunners and the RadMinis have 20" wheels and tires. The front dropouts are all the same size at 135mm while the rear dropouts are different. The rear dropouts are doable with spacers as the RW4 has a 175mm width. The RadRunner and RadMini are 167 and 170mm respectively.
However, if one could get the spokes and a rim for the rear wheel one could lace either the RW4 hub drive to the 20" wheel or a completely new hub drive to the wheel. Grin technologies has an excellent site where one can determine what length of spoke one would need and they can be ordered from them.
All of the bikes I've listed also use the same brake rotors, callipers and the same crank length so with the smaller diameter tires one doesn't even have to be concerned with parts compatibility or with clearance of the crank while riding.
Anyways, food for thought. Has anyone tried it yet?

General Chat / Compressed air
September 11, 2021, 10:05:48 AM
Hello everyone. I'm a new Rad owner and also new to this forum.
My question is, Has anyone used the small compressed air cylinders to refill their tubes after they have repaired a flat? If so, what adapter was used to make it compatible with the schrader valves on our bikes?
By small compressed air cylinders I am referring to the small ones that used to be used for BB guns, inflating balloons etc. I think one can still find them at hobby stores but I'm not sure anymore as it's been a few decades since I saw them. They're only about three inches long and 3/4 to one inch wide but they contain a fairly high volume of air.
I think carrying one or two of them would make re-inflating a tire less of a chore and would take less time than pumping the tire up. Might even make for a smaller toolkit too.
