Service & Repair / Re: Tucson Bike Shop?
March 25, 2022, 12:32:17 PM
Talk to Gary and Jesse Minard at Pima Street Bicycles. They are a repair-only facility with a few used bikes for sale. Gary will work on ebikes he can get parts for or will install your replacement part. He will not do mods such as second battery or upgrade your controller but is good on diagnosis and repair. Address is 5445 E Pima @ Craycroft Phone  (520) 326-4044

Anyone want to Ride America's #i Trail System with me sometime? USA Today voted Tucson's Chuck Huckelberry Loop shared-use trail the #1 trail system in the nation in 2021. It is an amazing 136 mile system that actually connects directly to about another 40-50 miles of trail as well.

I'm retired and ride it 4-5X per week. I see a dozen or more ebikes every time I'm out there. I mention this because Pima Count P&R manages the Loop and they currently list ebikes as prohibited. There is tremendous local pressure to allow at least Class I and II ebikes and I expect the rule to be dropped this year.

The reality is that ebikes freely and regularly use the Loop and there is no enforcement of the rule.  Ride responsibly and mostly pedal and you will blend right in. Ebike users are welcomed as just another rider would be.

The State of Arizona gives Class I and II ebikes the same rights and privileges as analog bikes but the Loop still says no ebikes. I've been told the reason is that the County thinks they are somehow more shielded from liability with the ban in place.

Meantime, let's ride!

Great stuff! Would different RAD models be too complicated? I have two picked out as soon as my finances recover from my Radrunner Plus purchase. Love high-viz colors for riding. Going for bright orange and would love safety yellow or green.

General Chat / Re: Inside the Rad battery and BMS

Thanks for the detailed explainer Dick. Are you affiliated with Rad or is this just your inner nerd unable to help himself?
I've built a few 48V cell packs successfully from recycled and load tested laptop batteries for a Sun EZ recumbent I converted back in 2015. Your observations are spot on and much appreciated.

My old Schwinn helmet is older than me in helmet years.  I will be going more places, going faster, and safety standards are about two generations newer so it's time for an upgrade.

First of all, Check out the amazing work Virginia Tech does on rating ALL types of helmets at
https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/index.html. Note that there is a new(2001+) safety system called MIPS which stands for Multidirectional Impact Protection System and it's all about slowing down the rate at which your head sees the energy of an impact. Turns out an extra 10-15 milliseconds is a huge plus for your brain. Read about it here:
https://www.evo.com/guides/mips-helmet-technology

Sooo - The VA Tech gang also RATES helmets on the website by how well they absorb force. It turns out you can buy a helmet with VERY high force protective numbers for $200-300 but yikes! It also turns out that you can buy one with a comparable GREAT rating for ---$50! The Specialized Align II. I popped for one today from backcountry.com with free shipping! Amazeballs!
FYI - no financial interest in any of this...

Rad Modifications / Track your RAD if its stolen?
May 21, 2021, 11:23:18 AM
Lots about locks and alarms in the Forum but I'd like to know what people are doing about tracking your bike if a motivated thief somehow succeeds and filches my RAD? These are my observations currently.
-GPS labels on fenders or frame aren't much of a deterrent to a motivated thief
- Actual GPS trackers work but are kinda large and obvious and invite getting removed or smashed
- Alarms are helpful but

I recently saw the Tile Sticker Its a bluetooth tracker that might be pretty good. About $20 ea. Black and 1 inch in dia and just over 1/4 thick. Connects to anyone within about 120 feet who has the Tile tracker running on their smartphone.  I'm getting one for under the seat and another on the battery. I'll report back how it works. The Tile website calls the universe of Tile users the world's largest search party so we'll see.

Comments and feedback welcomed

I'd  love to connect with other RAD owners for rides and I bet many others would as well.
Keep it simple to start. Just let people post when/where they want to ride. With my new rack, I can now hit trails and ride in other towns and locations in AZ and beyond.

How about it? Anyone else interested?

General Chat / Re: Hollywood Bike Racks?
May 21, 2021, 10:55:17 AM
I just bought the Fulltyme RV 1300 TWO bike rack from Walmart delivered for about $130. It is very well-reviewed everywhere online and is w-a-a-y less expensive than the Hollywood. Compared it to a friends Hollywood and they look almost identical. Finish not as good but looks every bit as strong. Holds my Radrunner no problem and locks down with no 'wobble'.
HEres a link for it an online retailer
