I've got a 2019 Rad Runner, with about 5000km on the stock battery and motor.
I've been running a 35A Controller for about 60% of that.
The battery is beginning to show its age, my napkin maths reckons it's down to 60% SOH compared to when new. Range from full is about 40km, wit a 50/50 mix of PAS1 and 100% throttle.
I'm considering replacing the battery with a higher voltage pack, and at the same time I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and upgrade the motor to get the most bang for my euro (assuming the stock motor goes bang if I don't upgrade it! ).

Higher top speed is the goal here, rather than acceleration (which is more than enough with the 35A brain!).

Has anyone run the 35A controller with a higher voltage battery pack?
Are there other higher power or higher KV motors available that are compatible with the 35A controller?

I know about the "true" 750W Bafang upgrade, and I've just seen some videos with a 3000W(!) motor, but that looks like a risky AliX purchase...

@reggy you can dial the power output up or down by adjusting the C5 setting.
There's no Always On function for the light, though you could in theory swap wires to get the same results if you were handy with a wirecutters and a soldering iron.

Hi Dan,
Sorry about the MOT fail! That's quite a hike on a bike, mate!

I bought my Rad Runner for a 5 mile commute, modified it (it does about 32 kph now, they're limited to 25kph out of the box).

That would work out at about half an hour less each way for you, if my mental maths are right.

I rode mine through most of last winter, once I'd invested in wet gear from boots to hat. I'm in the West of Ireland, so it gets cold and wet, but not a lot of ice. Stock tyres are OK on wet tarmac.

You're right at the edge of the range of the stock battery, I'd bring the charger and top up at work.

If you're used to a road bike, you'll find the seating position on the RR+ quite odd. It's very far forward compared to an acoustic bike, and you sit quite upright. It's not the most comfortable after an hour or so. RR+ has a better saddle than the slab of foam you get in the regular RR, but I don't know if I'd sit there for 90 minutes a go.

Have you considered other bikes like the RadMission?

You can by controllers like the Eggrider or 35A controller to get to to 32-35 kph, it gets expensive after that. I got my go faster bits from Gareth at BiggameBikes down in Worthing.

Very interesting. I bought the same light, with the intention of powering it from a lipo pack. But the output on 11.1V pack I built is rubbish. This would be an excellent Plan B.

Your method means no extra power source, and no extra buttons for daytime running. I run "lights on" all the time, more so I'm seen, than to see.

I already did something similar to the rear, it's in my build thread.

BTW, How's that mount working out for you?

I upgraded from a cheap skate helmet to a Thousands heritage, it's much more comfortable and fits so much better!

Just the one on mine!

Peak or sustained? I've gotten 1500W peak with fresh charged cells and a 35A controller. With the 35A controller it'll push out 800W as long as the battery can sustain it.
The reduction gears are plastic. I've done 3000km with that controller without motor issues.
Top speed is about 40kph/25mph, higher speeds would require a high kV motor, or higher voltage batteries.

Hmm, let me see!
I fitted the guts of a 4-48V LED into the housing for a motorbike light which initially housed a 12V bulb:

Swapped the BMW style bars for a MTB straight bar, and installed brown grips and custom caps;

I've also got this canvas pannier that I've been waiting for drier weather to put back on.

And i redrilled a couple of steel mudguards for another 20x4 bike to get them onto the Rad, and fitted a pair of Vee Speedster whitewalls;

There's also an airhorn, with the reservoir mounted in the storage console, a 5300 Lumen front light and a 35A controller & display fitted, but they're more bolt-ons than mods, really... :D

Hon Tipp!

Nice to see more Irish bikes on here, 20 - 25 PSI is all the tyres need really. Did you get the skewer sorted?

I had also been trying to find a way to run this 12V light form the controller: My solution was to extract the board from a cheap 6-60V LED light on Amazon.
It fought me every step of the way, but I made it work...

Lost another controller to the rain, cycling through Storm Franklin took its toll. About 2000km done on that controller over the year. In hindsight, having such critical hardware slung low on the bike might not have been the best idea after all!

Big shout out to Gareth in Big Game Bikes in the UK for helping me troubleshoot and ordering the replacement!

Standard 31.8mm OD if I remember correctly.

Sure thing, I have one of each!

Hi folks,
I've a few stock bits lying around here for the RadRunner. They're not worth much and I need the space. Make me an offer.

- OEM EU spec controller and display (confirmed working condition before I removed it)
- OEM Handlebars (available with or without RVM )
- OEM Kenda KRad tyres - Part worn (rear was about 50%, front was about 75%)
- OEM Front light (not the one featured in the pic below, that's a keeper!)

I'll grab a few photos when I get home this evening.

You pay for shipping.

I'm in Galway, Ireland.
