General Chat / Is Rad retiring the + models?
April 04, 2024, 07:36:56 PM
I see that Rad has introduced the new Radsters models. They look really interesting and are another step up from previous models. My wife and I each have a RadCity5+ (HS for me and a ST for her), and are very happy with the bikes. We are not looking to replace them anytime soon as we have only had them for two years. I have a query, Rad only produced 3 models with the display and controls of my bike (RadRover6+, RadCity5+ and the Radrunner3+) before bringing out a whole new bike with totally new controls. Will they have support for my bike in the future when the inevitable breakdown happens? The battery looks the same (which is good because I don't see an aftermarket battery being designed for my bike), so it should fit my bike when I eventually have to replace mine.

Just pondering the question.

I am the mostly happy owner of a RadCity5, but I live in Canada and our bikes are limited to 500W (I know how to get into the advanced settings and ours here don't give you the 750W option. Just 250W and 500W). I talked to the founder of the company when I was in Seattle a few years ago and was told that the bikes are set to the market they are sold in. I would like to get the US speck power of 750W if I can, and I have found controllers for sale. My only concern is if I purchase the controller, it might be exactly the same as the one I have now (the controller is to much of a pain to remove to look at the label, I only want to do it once).  Does anyone know for sure what is actually holds the program, the controller or the display?

Has anyone upgraded their plus model with a new 35watt controller and is looking to sell their stock Rad controller? I am in Canada and we are restricted to a 500watt setting. I would like a US spec 750watt controller for my RadCity5 plus bike.

RadCity / Re: Radcity 5 Plus replacing disc brake pads
September 01, 2023, 11:26:00 AM
I replaced the pads on my Radcity 5 in the spring. The shape of the pads precludes sliding them out. Removing the the caliper is the easiest way to do the job. If you are worried about realigning the caliper to the disk, I have found putting a piece of white paper on the ground helps make the alignment easier by making the gap more visible.

I hope this helps

Thanks for trying to help handlebar. Unfortunately that listing has been removed, so I can't read what was on it. From what I was able to see on the screen before ebay reroutes me, is that brake lever is for a cable activated brake system. My RadCity5 has hydraulic brakes and those would not be compatible. Thanks for trying.

Hi All,
My RadCity 5 was shipped with Nutt brakes and recently it started not energizing the motor after releasing the brakes. It was very intermittent in the beginning but slowly increased in frequency until it got to where it would do it every time I pulled the rear brake lever. I looked into how the system worked and it uses a magnetic proximity sensor to shut the motor off and activate the brake light. The sensor sends the signal when the magnet gets within range. The band-aid is to unplug the proxy sensor, but that is not the optimal solution. I did find that if I adjusted the lever closer to the handle bar, the system worked properly. That is not a great solution either as the lever is too close to the bar for me. My question is, does anyone know where the magnet is actually located (I know it is on the moving part of the lever assembly), and how to remove the lever arm without total disassembly of the master cylinder.

Hi,
I don't know if this helps your situation, but the fuse in the semi-integrated is replaceable. It is just much more of a process than it should have been. There are lots of videos available online, but this one seems to cover all the bases.

RadCity / Re: Rad city 5 plus fenders
December 31, 2022, 04:22:26 PM
I never noticed until I read this thread that the fender was installed by the factory incorrectly. Not sure if I will correct it though, I didn't install the reflector and it doesn't look too bad the way it is.

RadCity / Re: Rad City 5 reliability?
December 31, 2022, 11:25:00 AM
I purchased two RadCity5 plus ebikes (a standard and a step through) last year and am generally happy with them. The retail price here in Canada is $2300 but they can be had for $2000. I believe the sale price in the US is $1700. So for a $700 discount, I would definitely consider buying it. The only issue I have had with my bike (the standard model) is when the usb adapter I installed failed, the controller stopped working. When I removed it, the bike came back to life. I put almost 1000 miles on the bike this year with no real troubles.

Hi Mford4
I have always been partial to Ram Mounts. I started using them with handheld GPS's years ago and just migrated to cell phone mounts when I bought my first phone. They are very heavy duty but hold my phone tightly on my bike as well as my ATV, motorcycle and car..

This might be more than you want or need but you will not be disappointed with its performance. I have included a link to the company's web page but it can be found at other retailers for much less.

RadCity / Rad City 5 Plus upgrade
February 23, 2022, 07:36:11 PM
Has anyone heard if Area 13 (Bolton) is working on a upgrade 35A controller for the new semi integrated plus models?

Hello Slowrider,
I cannot say what will fix the problem with your bike. I can say that they sent you a display for the previous gen RadCity (I am assuming you have a new RadCity 5 Plus with the dual display). It will be incompatible with the controller on the new RadCity 5 Plus model. Reach out to Rad to send you the proper one (if they are available yet).

General Chat / Canadian RadCity 5 Plus
January 29, 2022, 03:49:31 PM
I purchased 2 RadCity 5 Plus models last fall here up in Canada. I received one of them a week ago and the first thing I did was go into the advance settings and adjusted the top speed to 40 Kph. I knew that here in the land of the over taxed and over regulated, the wattage limit is 500. I just didn't believe that Rad would have a different controller or motor specifically for our small market. Well the options available to me are 250w and 500w in the advanced setting and I have no idea about the motor. Does anyone know what motor is in the RadCity plus models, and is a upgrade controller available for this new model?
