RadRover / What settings are you using on your Bolton controller?
« on: February 25, 2024, 03:48:37 PM »
I went on my first real ride today since I upgraded my controller to an Area 13 controller on my Rad 6+. The delay for pedal assist seemed to be a problem as I started off from a stop. It?s ok if I use the hand throttle from a stop and let the pedal assist take over. I?m thinking I want to reduce or eliminate the delay. I?m wondering how everyone has set all the different settings on their Bolton controllers and why they chose what they did.

RadRover / Riding up a big hill on my RR6+
« on: January 30, 2024, 12:25:19 AM »
There is a trail near me that is around 1.5 miles gaining 750 feet in elevation. I?d like to try it now that I have the area 13 controller upgrade. The guy at the bike shop that installed it warned me about putting too much strain on the motor. How well does the RR6+ handle hill climbs. I like the view from the top but I dont want to burn up my motor. Anyone have experience doing hills?

RadRover / Rad Rover 6+ upgrade advice needed
« on: November 11, 2023, 06:44:09 PM »
I want to raise the handlebar on my Rad Rover 6+. I added some spacers but there isn?t enough slack in the electrical cables and brake hoses to raise it enough for me to sit upright. In order to raise it enough I need to add longer hydraulic hoses and controller wires. In the process of adding the spacers I over torqued the handlebar and I think I may have damaged it.
I called my local shop and asked if they could do the job for me. They said yes but when I took it there they said they wouldn?t work on it. I called a shop nearby that rents Rads and they refused to do it. I called a Rad dealership and they refused to do it. So it looks like I?m going to have to do it myself.
I work on my own cars so I figure I can do the job with the right tools, parts and information. I?m also going to add an upgraded controller I got from Area 13. I think I?ve found the extensions I need for the wires. I need to figure out what hydraulic hose I need and what I need to repair the headset. I don?t think there is a repair manual that has the information I need. With all the variations in parts that have been used it?s not easy to order replacements.
I guess the easy way would be to sell it and start over. Does anyone have some suggestions on how best to make this work?

I just watched the video on installing the upgraded controller for the Rover 6+. It is in stock. Has anyone ordered one yet?

RadTrike / Broken Trike
« on: July 07, 2023, 07:59:09 PM »
My brother was riding his trike around a corner and the rear end siezed up and broke some welds. We looked at it and the secondary sprocket had come loose and moved sideways. That caused the small chain to bind so when he tried to pedal it put stress on the brake drum and broke it.

Rad Modifications / Extending Cables To Raise My Handlebar
« on: June 14, 2023, 09:41:29 PM »
I raised my handlebar on my Rad Rover Six Plus but had to bring it down a little because the cables were stretched tight with the wheel turned all the way. I want to raise it more so I can sit more upright and take the pressure off my wrists. Does anyone have any ideas on how to lengthen my cables so I can raise my handlebar higher? Rad said they can?t help. It?s too bad they don?t sell a cable extension.

Service & Repair / Air in my brake line
« on: March 06, 2023, 08:55:43 PM »
I took my new RadRover 6+ on it first ride and the rear brake went from working normally to having almost no effect. I did some research today and figured out that it is caused by air in the line. I don?t know if there is a problem that allowed air to enter the line or if it was improperly assembled. I?m wondering if I should take it into Rad or just bleed it and hope that fixes it.

Rad Modifications / How much can I raise my handlebar?
« on: March 04, 2023, 03:19:44 PM »
I got a riser for my handlebar but I?m concerned about my cables and hydraulic lines being too tight. As I turn to the right the lines tighten up. It?s hard to tell if there is too much stress on them. I know I won?t turn the wheel 90 degrees while riding but could when handling the bike at other times. How can I tell if they are being stretched too much?

RadTrike / A new trike

My brother placed his order and will pick up his new trike at the Berkeley store as soon as they get it assembled.

General Chat / Is it time for a Rad Trike section?
« on: February 12, 2023, 12:48:01 AM »
My brother wants to buy a Rad Trike. After looking at all the similar trikes that seem to only have a web site behind them he came around to Rad. Should we add them to the forum?

Service & Repair / Chain lube
« on: January 29, 2023, 09:53:17 AM »
I?ve not seen any recommendations to lube the chains on my new RadRover or Expand 5. They look clean and dry. Is there some sort of dry lube on them?

Service & Repair / Choosing a tire pressure
« on: January 23, 2023, 03:34:51 AM »
I see that Rad recommends 20-30 lbs for my RadRover 6 plus. I?ve always filled my tires to the pressure shown on the sidewalls. I expect to be riding on streets, bike paths and light off road. I?m looking for advice on choosing a number that will best fit my needs. I plan to use Flat Out and Mr Tuffy tire liners. I want good traction mostly and of course a pressure that?s not likely to handle poorly or easily come off the bead. Then comfort after that. Any tips on choosing tire pressure?

General Chat / How much do you trust your Rad?
« on: January 16, 2023, 09:10:03 PM »
I?m hoping to do some rail trail rides this year. They have some 20 mile or longer rides in CA. I imagine I could end up 10 miles or more from civilization. Even with cell service a breakdown would be a big problem if there isn?t any way to get help to your location. An unexpected 10 mile hike would not be desirable.

General Chat / Best Dash Cam
« on: January 02, 2023, 12:17:45 PM »
I?m thinking about getting an action camera to mount on my new RadRover 6 plus. I?m disappointed by the short battery life of most cameras. I?m not posting to YouTube, I just want it as a dash cam. The Drift Innovation Ghost XL Pro looks to have good video and long battery life. It also has the ability to plug in a battery for even longer battery life. At $250.00 I could get one to face front and back for the same price as the GoPro max. Has anyone tried them? Any reviews? Thanks.

Rad Modifications / Throttle disconnect kit
« on: January 02, 2023, 12:26:10 AM »
I?ve seen instructions for installing a throttle disconnect kit. It is simply two caps to put on each end of the connector after it is disconnected. I haven?t been able to find how to buy one. I?d like to have the option of disconnecting the throttle to make it legal to ride in CA State Park and Recreation Area trails. Most all those trails are restricted to class 1 e-bikes. Can anyone tell me where to get the disconnect kit?
