The threaded inserts on the Rad racks are put there by Rad to mount one of their proprietary small or large baskets (more like cages) or platform.

MRI-Denver then offered their 3rd party Rad spare battery Carrier and Topeak MTX bag mount adapter to fit the Rad rack threaded insert pattern.

It should be relatively easy  to fabricate a wooden deck like on the RadWagon, countersink, four mounting holes and attach it with M5 x 0.8 flat head screws.

Rad Modifications / Re: Climbing Gear RadRunner1

Possible, yes BUT:

Chainline would have to be considered when choosing a new right crank, and the whole bottom bracket might have to be replaced to get something appropriate, and then you would have to ensure nothing interfered with your PAS encoder wheel and sensor mounting.

The "capacity" of the chain tensioner on the RadRunner 1 is not spelled out in the general specifications so you would need to see if it could accommodate the difference, or get another one with a longer cage.

Have you considered something like an Efeno GTRO, Schlumpf, or Metropolis Paterson internally geared botton bracket? (all are relatively expensive and some more difficult to fit than others).

Service & Repair / Re: RadRunner 1 - Delicate tires

I just put a stick through the tread of a "puncture resistant" Kenda K-Rad  20 x 3.3" tire, riding in the woods,  15 miles from home, and now I'm WAY more impressed with the capabilities of Park TB-2 Emergency Tire Boots and GP-2 Super Patches (multiples!) than I am with the tires, but I can reveal the inner belting of those Kendas is sheathed in a really pretty shade of green rubber, but once you see it, you're screwed.

Service & Repair / Re: Where to get tubes?
July 01, 2020, 10:03:55 PM
I just ordered two K-Rad 20 x 3.3" tires and two Kenda 20 x 4.0" tubes and the total shipping was $34 (to NY) so they must be giving some kind of multiple unit order quantity shipping discount. They broke the shipment down into two parts, tires & tubes coming on separate tracking numbers.

I'm still ticked off about their "accessories ship free with bike orders" promotion though. When I ordered my bike, they were out of stock on almost every  accessory I wanted and you couldn't add out of stock items to the initial order to qualify. So, I've  now shelled out about $60 in shipping charges on the things that have become available since (front & rear racks & large basket).

Another thing I've noticed about Rad is their back in stock notification emails that you can sign up for can be a bit late. I noticed the tubes were back in stock the other day when I went to order tires (after trashing one), and the back in stock email I had requested showed up a couple of days later. Same thing with the black RadMini Rear Racks. Even though I signed up, I've never received a notification that they were back in stock but I did see them listed one day, grabbed one, and they were out of stock again by the end of the day (and remain so). So, if you really want something, it just might pay to check regularly.

The red spring is optional, for riders weighing 180 pounds or more, and they also have another option for riders weighing 140 pounds or less:

Amazon is also presently temporarily out of stock on their 20" x 4.0" Mongoose tubes, so keep an eye on them as well to see who restocks first.

With regard to your question as to whether a 4.25" tube would fit a 4.0" tire, I can't say for sure, BUT, here's a somewhat related observation:

  The RadMini 4 uses a 20" x 3.3" tire.
  If anyone makes a 20" x 3.3" tube, I've never seen one.
Rad says the 3.3" Mini tire was designed to use a 4.0" tube and that's what they sell for it, so we know at least some "bigger tubes" fit "smaller tires".

Disclaimer, YMMV.

General Chat / Re: "Loop" handlebars

I remember thinking the same thing about the Jones but ended giving one of their Loop H-Bars a try back in 2013 and I'm glad I did, so much so that I bought another later on.

A lot depends on the other aspects of your riding position on the particular bike involved. I was looking for a more upright position on the bikes I put the Jones Bars on, and left the steering tubes as long as I could and used spacers/extenders to lift the bars, trying to get weight off my wrists. Still some of my favorite bikes.

If you mean the four threaded top inserts for mounting baskets/platforms, then M5-0.80 in whatever length you need.

Edit: The thread depth of the welded inserts is about 1/2" (12.7mm for those still using the metric system).

I agree that controller is in a terrible spot.

Yeah, it's in the same place as the one on the RadMini 4, looks problematic for sure.

It looks like REI sells these Baskets in the US with a "Quick Detachable" spring loaded mount that may not work so well on Rad racks, but can easily be removed in favor screw mounting. With a little work, it might be possible to modify the QD mount to work with our racks.

Some people who have attempted to use cheap "switcher" type Li-ion chargers like these with non-pure sine wave inverters have experienced a number of problems, up to and including fires.
You should be fine though with a high quality true pure sine inverter of sufficient capacity but even a modified sine type might be a crap shoot.

Before Sliming, bear in mind that the stuff dries out (the company says it lasts about two years) and implies that everyone either does or should be replacing their tires/tubes at that point anyhow.

If you don't ride enough to wear out your tires in two years, you would still have to deal with dried up sealant that would no longer do what you were counting on it to do.

With tubeless tires, you can demount them, clean out all the balled up gunk (it's a messy job), then remount and refill them, but we're not so "fortunate".

With our tubes there is no practical way to get the old stuff out, so tube replacement at least every two years is the only option (gets expensive). I don't think it would be a good idea to just keep adding new charges of fresh Slime every two years or so on top of the dried out gunk that's already in there.

Kind of makes Mr Tuffys (3XL for 3.1"-4" fat tires) a more attractive option.

The NEW style Cane Creek Thudbuster ST (Short Travel) is listed as supporting rider weights up to 330 lbs / 150 kg but in my opinion that would be pushing it for the smaller 27.2 mm size used on all the Rad bikes. Cane Creek has UK dealers but it may take a while for the NEW model ST to show up there. The older ST model and all the LTs (Long Travel) are only recommended for 250 lbs / 114 kg max rider weight.  The NEW ST also has longer travel than the old one, 2in / 50mm, which should help.

General Chat / Re: 1UP hitch carrier

1UP now makes a a rack for wider (up to 4.5") fat bike tires, the Equip-D model.

I have an older model which required the use of spacers on the wheel clamp arms to accommodate fat tires but I haul a 4"+ tired Salsa Mukluk around and it's rock solid, even off-road with a 1 1/4 inch receiver mount. The way a 1UP kicks up, rather than sticking straight back means it doesn't reduce departure angle and drag in the rough stuff as much as most other brands.

I look forward putting my Rad on it, but the bike has to ship before that can happen.

Edited to correct information I posted earlier based on my my older model IUP, the new Equip-D models are different, and look to be Rad compatible without mods or fat tire spacers
