🤔. The totes are a good base for overall size except they seem to be a bit too long sometimes.   The tricky bit is the height.    I have a Toyota Corolla 2005.  And can fit one in the trunk and backseat.    I'd suggest getting a new moving blanket and experimenting with lifting them and arranging them.  If you can use the blanket to pull them in as you get one then the next into the hatch then by arranging them on the blanket in different configurations will give. You the minimum dimensions you would need to have.

Height, width and length. Good Luck!

I got the same one.  It's the largest anywhere here in Canada.  Lowe's in the US had the size I needed(largest one) but unavailable here.

Good luck!   And if folded correctly I can fit this in my 2005 Toyota Corolla back seat.  Minus the seatpost.

Thank You!  I will look into finding a higher power controller.   Bolton doesn't ship to Canada💔.   I went with rad mostly because so many parts are upgradeable!

If anyone has experience with one I can get here I would love to know.  Otherwise  I will be searching forbonebon my next day off😅.

I'm having pannier issues too.  I need quick release everything so it doesn't walk away when I need to lick it up.

As such.  Instead of spending big $$$.  I'm making my own with black Ikea Desk pads($3.99CAD).   I will be experimenting with  Cosplay Costume Plastic that can be microwaved and shaped to make a clip.

Construction of the bags themselves will be interesting.   I am planning to use a Cheap Canadian Tire pannier set from Raleigh as a shell and the desk pads to give it a better shape as well as a solid foundation to secure the clips to.

I might splurge and buy 2 clear desk pads to make a panel to protect the bags from the wheel and mud

Rad Modifications / Re: E bike battery fires
May 12, 2023, 11:15:44 PM
I was told once. Everything can kill you.  Everything.

Here's the thing.   If you spend 3 hours worrying about something with the probability of killing you at 1 in 1000000 .
That's an underestimate based on the number of batteries that cause fires and ones that don't.  If you take. California alone I bet there are at least a million lithium batteries in Anaheim alone!

Dryer fires and Grease fires are top of the lists to worry about.   Battery fires are very very low on the totem pole.

So...  If you worried about everything that has a tiny chance of killing you or causing a fire then you would be worrying 24/7  365.   Your Prevention prep is a bit excessive for the actual risk.  Unless you also charge your cell phones, and all batteries in such a case then it's probably not going to be effective.

Ebikes are still a big Free for all with many many companies doing everything they can to try to compete.   That includes battery supplier compromises....

A better use for that case would be to put Any Cheap rechargeables  like Knockoff Bluetooth speakers or battery banks, anything  else that might not be from a company with a big established reputation  at stake.

Those kinds of items are more likely to contain batteries that don't have the quality control and sometimes even the safety mechanisms in place to prevent combustion.

Pick your battles.   Ride your bike, wear a Good helmet, be visible, in a car wear a seatbelt. Clean your dryer vents and lint traps,  keep your stove clean and live your life🥰.

Now where can I get an adapter that lets me use Tool batteries as a emergency power supply for my bike🤣

RadExpand / Underpowered solutions?
May 12, 2023, 10:41:26 PM
I live in a Pretty flat city.... Except for the river valley on the edge of downtown.

I picked the expand 5 because reviewers had shown the 750watt motor and I knew it could handle the crazy steep hills I would need it for.....

Well. I found out after Dying trying to get up one of these hills(should have got off and walked)

Aftwards I found out Americans get a 750watt motor which is what I see in the Climb reviews I watched where Canadians get a 500watt motor😢.

Anyone know if the wheel can be swapped for a American one to upgrade it to a 750 watt one?

RadExpand / Re: Will it Fit in____Trunk

Added detail.  I bought a big tub.  This makes getting it in and out of my back seat a breeze compared to the trunk!   If anyone wants dimensions I can look.  In Canada only Home Depot Carries that large of a size ... With wheels as a non optional bonus😅.

Lows in the states has that size on their website but not in Canada

Good luck and happy riding people!

RadExpand / Re: Concern about Handlebar stem
April 27, 2023, 12:40:51 PM
I understand your concern.  On one of my first rides out I braked hard and those handlebars rotated forward on me.

Got off. Grabbed my Allen key repositioned the handlebars.  And tightened them screws as hard as I could.

Not even a wiggle since.

I'm not super strong but I definitely put allot of foce behind tightening them.  Slight bend on Allen key too

When tightening try a Cris crass pattern.   Top left bottom right to help preventbovertightening one side more then the other.

Good luck!   And don't fret you can do it yourself!   Just GET a Proper pedal wrench and tighten them properly.  That was my only other diy fail point.

If you want to be sure.   Try sitting on the bike and forcing those handlebars forward.   If your still not sure ask someone stronger to try.     . Other idea is Loctite the stuff for screws. Now I'm getting ideas for other movey but don't want moviey things. Namely my phone holders and front basket.

🤔Umm.  Why don't you just get a oldish phone with a Micro SD card slot.  A phone mount.  And BOOM. Good video and cheap with long battery life and amazing capacity.   Am I missing something there????

You would then need to have an option between apple or Android when ordering plus the licencing fees and many other crazy costs I'm sure Samsung and Apple would charge per bike🙈.    Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it added an extra $500 to each bike.

The other issue is if you have one in your shed or somewhere hidden like your trunk then anyone can do that tag check and find it.

Its a double edged sword.   Personally I just remove everything valuable ie battery and accessories.   Then I use 3 U locks and a cable Lock.   Takes 5 mins but it's worth every second spent for that comfort

Is there a way to do this on a radexpand 5 without the upgraded LCD display?

RadExpand / Will it Fit in____Trunk
June 10, 2022, 05:18:29 PM
So. A topic on if it will or won't Fit in the trunk of X car model or not.

Rad EXpand 5.   Fits in
2005 Toyota Corolla trunk.
Difficulty 3/5.

Difficulty details necessary to fit
Pedals need to be positioned correctly and it has about 1cm of clearance but it 100% is possible but it's not easy.   Blankets or something will be needed to prevent damage to either car or bike finishes.

1/5 goes in easy with lots of wiggle room
2/5 a little tight blankets or something to protect from bumps likely needed but no special exact folding or orientation of pedals or handlebar or other components needed.
3/5 It fits barely.  But needs a specific folding method and orientation of the handlebars and or pedals in order to have a hope of getting it in or out.  Paint protection is a must as well.
4/5 meaning changes to one big stock feature are necessary but the bike once transported comes out and no extra extra work needed to get it fully functional again.. Ie: removing the bottom liner of the trunk.  Or replacing the pedals with specific after market ones, removing the seat and seatpost.  Not removing and reattaching the handlebars or other major components that aren't easily reinstalled like the front wheel.
5/5 would mean modified trunk And bike features like pedals or wheel removal. Etc. Something to do only if you had no other options and it isn't a quick fix to put it all back.(road trip to a destination, bike needed to be transported to enjoy that destination,.  Pull bike out assemble/fix then enjoy, disassemble   Go home.   Fix trunk and bike and enjoy like normal.

Hope this helps someone.  It's next to impossible to get specific information so I hope this topic might grow to be a nice repository for future reference.

Deep discharge does also reduce battery life. batteryuniversity.com cautions against it.

Battery charge limits can be set by monitoring either voltage or current. I've monitored both while charging to get an idea of how the Rad charger operates. Of minor concern to me is that the charger continues to supply current at a low level even after the charge light turns green.  Voltage peaks at 53.8V. Current drops to only 20 mA but doesn't shut off after several hours - this may be in order to achieve the balance charge. If not balance charging, Rad recommends disconnecting the charger as soon as possible after the green light, but that is not always convenient.  I have asked Rad via email why they don't stop charging altogether; I have not yet gotten an answer.

I'm going to build a simple circuit to plug in between charger and battery to monitor current and automatically disconnect at a desired current, and give that a try.

Reading further there are a number of lengthy and very informative posts on more technical specs.

For a really crazy and simple solution to shutting off the charging after X amount of time. There's a Cheap and Easy option.

Possible Option#1 Pump Timers/Heat pad/Light timers for hydroponics Reptile Enclosures/Fish lights. *****Power consumption for charging may exceed safe limits for the these types of timers.   I'm not an expert so I don't know..  option#2 is a safer one but option #1 might be just as safe be sure to read the specs and don't exceed them****

Definitely Safe option#2.   Block Heater Timer for Cars.  If you don't know what a block Heater is... Well. It's mandatory in all vehicles sold in Canada since it warns up the cars engine block in winter.   This often is the difference between starting or not starting a car in winter.   Lots of power and a heavy duty switch mechanism.   I asked if it was possible to get a remote operated one... Yup. Not possible due to the power involved apparently 😅

Hopefully that's a quick Easy and cheap solution for the charging time shutoff issue some people may have.

On the other hand.,..    complete Discharge of any litium ion battery is NOT. A good idea.   Lots of techy stuff but it causes irreparable damage to a component in the cells.   Even a small charge is better then none and any good BMS should prevent that... "Should". Being the key word there... But we all know techy stuff can mean glitchy stuff.

I hope this may be useful.   I read the other replies and no one mentioned using timers to stop the charging.    Lots of detailed techy info in volts amp hours etc etc.
Learned a few things.
1.  What you plug in first.  Plug to wall or plug to device/battery is Important!
2.  Don't Store it Dead or Hot.
3.  It's hard to drain the battery on the bike without knowing it's going down.
4. Full battery= better/stronger/more power assist.
5.  Battery University... If I want to save money on expensive lithium ion batteries I better go visit.   At this point I want to earn a master's degree but I don't think they offer those😂.
6. There's something called battery balancing...  I think I need to know more... 🤔 Maybe?

Take care of your battery.  It's only a key component in what makes an ebike an ebike😅. Unless a couple hundred dollars in a few years is no biggie....  Maybe closer to 1k at this inflation rate🙈

Rad Modifications / Re: u-lock bracket
June 10, 2022, 03:17:25 PM
Sounds like that lock is just a tad too heavy.  Would it be possible to reinforce it somewhere and/or modify it?   The design itself is genius.  I could see any seamstress or someone with Mad Glue gun skills making one from a more durable canvas or some other outdoor materials.
