General Chat / Re: Seat Post - Out of Stock
January 10, 2024, 01:53:45 AM
I've purchased two SR Suntour SP12 NCX Seat Post of eBay back in 2017 for my two 2016 Radrovers.  I purchased the 400m seat post with red +195lbs hard springs for around +/- $80 back then.

Service & Repair / Re: Battery life
January 09, 2024, 04:48:01 AM
I have 3 batteries from my two 2016 Radrovers (4000 miles on each rad) and one battery on my 2018 Radcity (1000 miles).  I've lost about +/- 20% range on these batteries.  I usually only charge to max levels before a ride.  I leave it a the whatever charge level in-between rides (30%-90% power range).  I can probably count on one hand when I needed to use 100% battery power on +8000 miles I put on the ebikes.  The range loss really isn't a factor for my riding habits.

General Chat / Re: Winter eyewear?
December 18, 2023, 06:20:39 AM
I use motorcycle glasses that are polarized (day) or clear lens (night) eyewear for 3 seasons.  They have foam cushion around the eye pieces to limit bugs, dust, or dirt into my eyes. I had issues in near/below freezing temps with this types of eye protection with fog up or the freezing cold air would cause my eyes to water. Switched to clear and smoke ski googles at those temps and that seemed to work keeping my eyes from watering and reducing fog build up (don't need to wear contacts or glasses for normal vision).  I also use anti-fog spray on the ski goggles and that really helps fog build up when you have to make a short stop at light or intersection.

How To Information / Re: Tips for Washing your bike?
December 13, 2023, 04:24:30 PM
I have two Radrovers, two step-thru Radcities, and a Himiway Cobra Pro.  I figure the ebikes mechanicals and electronics are somewhat water resistant against rain, puddles, and ebike tire splash.  I use way less soap and water washing compared to riding and getting stuck in the rain storm.

The most important tool I have for washing my ebikes (and cars) is an air blower.  So many places for water to hide and sit to cause rust or prevent lubrication from penetrating.  I wash with microfiber towel+car soap, soft bristle brush on the tires, and rinse with low water pressure with nozzle on full spray.  I use my XPower A-2 Airrow Pro 2 speed electric air 90 CFM to blow out any water from frame, brakes, spokes, chain, derailleur, etc...  I also use my air blower if I'm caught in rain storm on my ebikes to speed up the drying process.

I called my USAA insurance agent when I purchased my two Radrover ebikes back in 2016.  The USAA agent said my ebikes are covered under my homeowner's policy.  They considered my ebike like a regular pedal bike because it doesn't require registration like other types of motorized vehicles. My homeowner's also covers my ebikes instead of my USAA auto policy if I'm driving out of state with my ebikes.  I called because the wife and I decided to take our ebikes to Grand Canyon and Sedona, AZ, from New Mexico back then.

It is just a quick phone call to your agent to find out for sure if you are automatically covered, if you need to purchase additional coverage, any limitations, or provide additional documentation at claim time.  I haven't double-check since then to find out if USAA had a change in their policy coverage.

General Chat / Re: Bike Rack Question
November 07, 2023, 06:41:25 AM
I have a Saris SuperClamp4 Freedom 4 position bike rack since 2016 with 2 sets of fat tire trays for my SUV with 2" hitch+harness.  I used it for years with my 2016 two +70lbs Radrover and 2018 Radcity Step-Thru.  It was a PITA to deadlift the ebikes, remove rack bag/battery, or having my 4'11" wife help lift over 2-3 positions to mount to the tray close to the hatch.  Trying to store, deadlift to install the 70lbs rack, add anti-rattle devices, and needing tools to mount/dismount made it a negative for taking ebikes anywhere other than out to the local trails from the house.  I was using the Saris rack about 80% of the time for a single ebike only.

Just recently upgraded to the QuikRack Mach 2, 2nd rack, loading ramp, license plate attachment, and wheel locks.  The 2 rack QuikRack is 2X more expensive compare to the 4 position Saris rack and it had a 2 month wait time.  The advantages I needed/wanted over other brands was:

- no tools needed to mount/dismount (just a push button barrel key lock)
- you can install/uninstall the rack in under a minute
- built in anti rattle system
- 28lbs for the hitch rack and 22lbs for the second rack attachment (wife can install either rack)
- easy on/off with ramp or lifting one tire at a time into the QuikRack (wife can mount/lock down her ebike alone with ramp)
- folds for easy storage in rear SUV hatch or garage
- trays can be used for up to 5" fat tires without additional accessories for more $$$ and no tools needed for adjustments
- can accommodate long wheelbase ebikes or downhill bikes up to 56"
- no adjustments needed to mount both ebikes on trays (no adjusting the seat height, hitting handlebars, adjusting pedal positions, kickstand needing to be up or down, removing rack bags/batteries)
- each tray can hold 120lbs (240 lbs total).  Make sure the ebikes don't exceed your vehicle's tongue wights requirements.
- I just need to move an ebike up or back a few inches to fit if I need to mount two side-by-side compared to having fixed trays like my Saris rack.

General Chat / Re: Buyer's Remorse
November 01, 2023, 03:47:23 AM
I've had my two Radrovers since 2016 with around 4000 miles on each (few squeaks and 20% less battery range).  I just upgraded my wife's 2018 Radcity step-thru with a 2023 Radcity step-thru and she loves the improvements and ride quality.  I was torn between upgrading to a 2023 Radrover or jump ship to another brand.

I decided to skip the 2023 Radrover because I didn't see a significant improvements or expanded capabilities compared to my two old Radrovers.  I did a lot of on-line reviews, visited eMTB websites, checked out other ebike forums, and YouTube reviews on different types of fat tire ebikes.  Decided to give Himiway Cobra Pro a try (400lbs capacity, 10 speed, mid-drive 1000w-1600w, 160Nm tq, throttle, full air suspension, 4.8" fat tire, tq sensor, 20 Ah battery, full color display).

I still have my two Radrovers for casual riding or if I need an extra ebike for friends/family for group rides.  I always wanted to upgrade to a mid-drive for expanded capabilities for single track and riding in the Sandia foothills (hilly and rocky with elevation of 6000-7200 feet).

General Chat / Re: Stolen Rad Power Bike

I wish ebikes would have an option to lock up the motor when off.  Seems like that would be an inexpensive option for hub or mid-drive motor?  My new 88lbs Himiway Cobra Pro with mid-drive has the option to lock out the controls with a passcode (I haven't used it yet).  Probably set the passcode next summer when I travel more with our ebikes.

Do you know the serial number of your ebike?  I would let the police know the S/N and sign up for bike registry sites like Bike Index, Project 529, and local police bike registry sites.  The ebike might be parted out or abandoned on the side of the road once the battery power runs out (unless they have a charger).

I would check into GPS trackers and air tags for next time.  I also have layered security with my Rad ebikes (2 rovers/2 Radcity).  Adding 2-3 locks might be enough to make a thief move to an easier target compared to having one lock. I have a cable lock, chain+lock, U-bolt lock, and Boomerang cell GPS tracker.  I would add 1-3 layers depending on the situation and how much time I'm going to be out-of-site from our ebikes.

I ended up going with the Sunlite Cloud-9 Cruiser Saddle, 12.5" X 11.5" X 8, Amazon, $37.  The wife and I are mid-50s, wear padded riding shorts, and adjust our ebikes for a more upright riding position. We like wider seats that spreads out the contact points across the butt cheeks for long range comfort. I purchased my first Cloud-9 back in 2016 for my two Radrovers.  No issues with the size with causal riding or single track riding with my rover (also have a Kinekt Bodyfloat suspension seatpost). Upgraded the standard seat to the Cloud-9 on my two Radcity step-thru and Himiway Cobra Pro.

General Chat / Re: Rad

I have two 2016 Radrovers with 4000 miles each ebike.  The wife has a 2018 Radcity Step-thru and just updated her to a 2023 Radcity Step-thru.  Had my share of controller issues, flats, brake cables, replacing tires, replacing brakes/pads, and adding accessories (tire liners, adjustable handlebar stem, larger pedals, rack, suspension seatpost, aux lights, etc...).

I really really enjoyed riding, updating, and trouble-shooting/fixing my ebikes over the years.  I've put 10X more miles (and 10X more smiles) compared to my old 700X40c pedal bikes we had for years before our first ebikes.

RadRover / Re: Increasing Top Speed
October 16, 2023, 06:53:25 AM
I have two older 2016 Radrovers and I could adjust the motor cut off from 20 mph to a touch under 25 mph.  I also had to adjust the tire size on the LCD screen from 26" to 28" because my rover odo/mph was a little off compared to my wife's Radcity's odo/speedo and off compared to neighborhood speed limit radar signs.

I ended up changing my max cut-off speed to around 21 mph because:
- the 7-speed gearing is set around 20-22 mph and I really couldn't pedal +25 mph
- I can only use the throttle at 22-25 mph; which, lowers my range and more wear/tear on the motor at max power
- the standard knobby tires felt a little squirrely at +20 mph; especially, in a turn.  I figured it was because of the smaller contact patch from all the tiny knobbies.  Solved my high speed stability issue with Vee Rubber Vee8 120tpi tires (way less noise, better high speed stability, longer tread life).
- the standard brake cable started to fray and break strands with repeated stops at +22 mph.  Had to upgrade the brake cables to Jagwire brand.
- quickly found out the standard brakes are not designed for repeated and emergency stops at +25 mph. They glazed over and were very noisy.  Upgrading to TRP Spyke brakes+TRP pads solve the emergency/noise issue.

My two 2016 Radrover are still going strong with my 2nd set of Vee8 tires, 2nd set of TRP brake pads, and zero issues with original chain/hub motor/brakes after 4000 miles on each ebike.

I have two his/her 2016 Radrovers with around 4,000 miles on each.  I purchased a 2018 Radcity Step-thru because my wife felt the radrover was too large for her and hard to mount.  Updated her Radcity to the an 2023 Radcity 5+ Step-Thru back in July 2023 (took about a 3-weeks to come in).  She really likes her new 2023 Radcity because of the improved built quality and updated parts.  Rad Power Bikes seems to be still sticking to their original formula of regular bike with electric components; which, make Rad ebike easy to service and upgrade.

The choices of ebike from 2016 to now has grown +500%.  We were torn between going with tried/true or going for something new/different when we wanted to upgrade her ebike.  We didn't keep up with the issues Rad Power Bike was/are having in the more crowded marketplace. We did have a failed controller with only 16 miles on the 2023 Radcity that needed to replace after a first week of ownership.  Thinking back, both 2016 Radrovers also had failed controllers 3 times during the first year of ownership.

One thing the wife and I did before purchase was we found bike shops when on vacation that rented Rad Power Bikes.  We were able to test ride for hours an ebike with some wear/tear to see what it will feel like with these ebikes down the road.  It eliminated a big unknown about long-term ownership and buyer's remorse after purchase.

RadCity / Re: Add/Increase Battery to City5+
October 02, 2023, 05:14:15 AM
I have two older 2016 Radrover with the smaller 11.4 Ah battery.  I ended up purchasing an extra battery and 2X my range alone or extend the range between two ebikes sharing 3 batteries.  The extra battery was small enough to place inside mine or the wife's Topeak MTX side fold out pannier if I know I/we will pushing the range limits on a ride.

A huge plus with the extra battery is I can rotate them between primary to back-up every few months.  All three battery packs are over 8 years old with around 10-15% loss in capacity with 8000 miles between both ebikes.

Service & Repair / Re: Radrover break pads do not work.
September 29, 2023, 05:31:05 AM
I have a two 2016 Radrovers with 4000 miles each I used for weekend fun rides at first.  Decided to work commute a year later at 18-22 mph range for 7-20 miles (depending if I take a detour to hit the single tracks on the way home).  I quickly found out the standard brakes are good for weekend trails; but, not up to par for emergency stops at 20 mph when a car runs a stop sign.  The pads glazed over pretty quick over time and I had much longer braking distances in emergency situations.  Narrowed down the issues to brake pad materials, stretching of brake cables, brake cables strands breaking, and realizing the current brakes were at their limits at max speed at my max cargo capacity.

Solve my issues with upgrading to TRP Spyre Mechanical brakes, TRP replacement brake pads, and jagwire MTB brake cables (cable only, reused the housing).
