Rad Modifications / Re: my RadRunner Plus - PLUS

Nice! Looks like you did a great job! I was considering mounting my 2nd battery to the water bottle bosses but felt that it might be a bit insecure but it looks like you were able to manage.

Keep us posted when you decide to add that 3rd battery or the solar panels!

Rad Modifications / Re: Throttle disconnect kit

I?ve seen instructions for installing a throttle disconnect kit. It is simply two caps to put on each end of the connector after it is disconnected. I haven?t been able to find how to buy one. I?d like to have the option of disconnecting the throttle to make it legal to ride in CA State Park and Recreation Area trails. Most all those trails are restricted to class 1 e-bikes. Can anyone tell me where to get the disconnect kit?

I believe that you have to purchase the disconnect kits that Rad has directly over the phone.

General Chat / Re: What's up with pricing?

Rad let everyone know that prices will indeed be going up in 2022. I really can't see the justification for some of their current prices much less them being increased. I guess we'll see!

Hi! Just installed the new display today! It?s working BUT I still find the brightness weak? maybe it?s normal
What do you think ?

The center display has a screen brightness setting that you can change - I'd check to see what it is set to because the difference between the two is noticeable.

General Chat / Re: How old is my Rover ?

If I remember correctly, Rad's SNs are coded with a manufacturer date built-in, so they should be able to tell just by that or you can send them a pic of the bike and they can probably tell by that as well.

Unfortunately, I've heard of these issues all too often with Rad replacement parts. Rad touts that they are "responsible" to the environment and all, but I've heard of repeated examples where they won't offer a simple replacement part for no real reason other than they don't have it but expect the entire item to be scrapped and replaced instead.

Trashing an entire ebike battery because of a $1 "non-replaceable" fuse, anyone?

RadRunner / Re: Radrunner Plus - Hydraulic Brake Swap

I did the swap out for the hydraulic brakes that Area 13 is selling on my Runner Plus, almost went with the BGB brake set but went with the 4 pistons instead. The installation was surprisingly easy and the performance is great.

I'm about to pull the trigger on these. I'm curious, did you run the rear brake through the frame? And if so, I assume you needed to bleed them after - do you have a bleed kit you'd recommend?

I ran the rear through the frame and haven't had the need to bleed it just yet so I haven't looked into bleed kits. From what I can see these brakes look a lot like the ones that come on some of the Surron models so I'll probably just see what people have been using to bleed/refill those and go with it.

It's not too informative but I did make a video of my impressions of the brakes here: https://youtu.be/RRjqbxca4IY

Rad Modifications / Re: Lcd display for RR1
December 19, 2022, 05:58:05 AM
As Altema mentioned, the stock Rad display upgrade will not give you any added power/torque so for $100 it's not really worth the price. When it's 50% off like it currently is.. it's a bit harder to say if I feel that it's worth it.

In the US, the display only lets you "unlock" from 32kph to a top speed of around 40kph, but I haven't heard if the EU version will let you unlock from the 25kph limit up to 40kph or what it tops at. Anyone know for sure?

Personally, I'd wait for the Eggrider to come back in stock or do the full display/35amp upgrade (but that would be a big jump in price). All versions of the eggrider were out of stock for quite a while but the Bafang version is now showing that it's available, so maybe the other units will be back soon too? Here's hoping. 🤞

There are a million reasons for Rad not to do it and only a few advantages for them to implement it.

Even with their "plus" series, Rad is an economy/budget ebike brand and I don't see that changing. The GPS tracker functionality has typically been a feature that premium or higher-end ebikes would have.

I agree though, it would be nice if Rad started adding more quality-of-life features like smartphone app functionality and such, but with their financial troubles in 2022 (which will be carrying over to 2023) I don't expect that many new superfluous bells and whistles being added to their bikes anytime soon, sadly.

But otherwise, bike thieves are trash.

Hi all

got my RR1 last week and looking to build some storage underneath the passenger seat. I saw some people have fitted bags but if somebody has ideas or a plan with dimensions to build a metal/wood storage box for the RR1 - I would appreciate to get your suggestions for inspiration. I thought about building something in light wood with a sideopening lid to store some rain gear ( coat, gloves, etc)

I've seen a few different versions of under the rear rack storage on the Runner. Including 3D printed boxes, custom-made sheet metal compartments with a lockable flip-up passenger seat, to basic setups using metal mailboxes or ammo storage boxes that you can purchase in most hardware stores simply bolted to the bottom of the rack.

I've looked into it briefly but since I stuck a second battery in that spot it was no longer an option for me but there are numerous mods that I've seen regarding it.

Good luck and happy modding!

RadCity 5+ and RadRover 6+ are currently at 1199 EUR in Europe. I'm "not amused", since we paid way more for these bikes. I'm not sure why they do that.

I'm pretty sure they are just simply on sale for $1199 at the moment. They will probably be back up to their regular price after the holidays, or there will be a price increase with the new year and they'll be more than what you paid.

The RadCity 5+, RadRover 6+, and RadWagon 4 should only be showing at $1999 on the US site. They recently discontinued a few of their older (lower priced) models like the RadMission 1, RadCity 4 and RadCity Step Thru 3 so that price creep is getting pretty noticeable. I wouldn't be surprised if a price-hike announcement was right around the corner with the new year.

RadTrike 1:          $2499
RadRover 6+:      $1999
RadCity 5+:         $1999
RadWagon 4:       $1999
RadRunner Plus:   $1899
RadExpand 5:       $1599
RadRunner 2:       $1499

But yeah, Rad's pretty over-priced at the moment compared to its competition.

If you're doing the battery swap thing and not hooking both up at the same time - you could simply buy a 2nd battery and carry it along in a bag or rear rack and switch it out when needed.

right - that's what I said. Just looking for exactly where it hooks up.

Ah okay. That's why I'm a bit confused by your question, if you have 2 batteries you wouldn't need to hook anything up. Unless you had a non-Rad semi-integrated battery for your backup, which you didn't specify at first.

Otherwise, it's the battery connector cable that is found running along the battery spot in the frame. It's a round 2-pin connection and pretty easy to find if you know where to look.

Yep, they are the same voltage (48v) and have the same battery tray connector so you can swap them one for the other.

Rad used to say that you could use the standard 14Ah battery on the RadMission for about a month.. then redacted it and made up some nonsense excuse as to why they don't recommend it.
