They sound almost like the springs that tension a Fender Stratocaster guitar tremolo block (actually, it's
vibrato, but Leo Fender insisted on the term "tremolo").
Unfortunately, one end does not curl around, it's just bent at right angles.

Nope. Too long.
The bungee cords might be a good temporary fix, but they might rot out from ultraviolet light. Since you've got two of them, one is bound to break before the other, and the surviving one is probably enough to get by until you replace them both.
