If a new battery costs $549 or 599 € it would be good to have a decent lock... Almost 50% of the price of the bike itself.

On this video the key and lock mechanism look very similar to Rad's key and lock:
https://youtu.be/ZNamd6m_eOM

On the other hand it is not difficult to thief the whole bike either:

Sure you can built ebikes like these, that cost next to nothing. But I would never want to ride one myself... These cheap bicycles just can't be safe - front fork, frame, wheels etc. If they crack on speed, well good luck! And add the extra stress that electric motor causes to the components that were not originally designed for ebike use, you will only get more problems.

The Stan guy kinda cracks me up.  The wally world Mongoose that he build is way more of a POS base bike that any radpower bike.  I built a DIY ebike using a mongoose Mack and the thing is not nice and no way it will hold up.  I just did it to mess around with and when I run across a decent frame to upgrade to that.

I will be surprised if his DIY walgoose lasts 6 months.
Well, this guy has done over 10000 km (6200+miles) with his DIY ebike, and his frame nor the e-kit is not that nice either: https://bendurham.ca/transportation/ebikes/diy-ebike-1000km-update-april-2018/ (look for other blog link for the 10000 km update)

Actually, like he mentions on his blog, the look of his bike will not make thiefs much interested in it. And I believe it... ;)

Some experiences from Rad ebike owners...

This guy did over 5000 miles in about 3 and half years with his RadRover without any bigger trouble:

And this guy over 3500 miles in 11 months:

... Until he had enough and changed to a DIY ebike... ;)

Youtube is full of Rad ebike reviews, you can get a quite good understanding what can get broken etc. with Rads.

@Rady, do you happen to work for The Daily Rider in Washington? ;)

But to be honest, if not a troll this could be a true real life case. Seen many like this in car forums, where brand new cars (even so called premium brands) just gets broken in any possible ways. Not many, just a few but still. And who got problems, make most noise. Who are happy, mostly stay quiet.

And yes, Rad Power Bikes do not use the highest quality (and priced) parts. Keeping this in mind and doing regular maintenance tasks you can do thousands of miles with Rad bikes (just Google it).

To be honest, if my Rad would have been more expensive I never bought it. And I got it on sale just 1200 euros... :)

@sloppy I guess you mean this charger?
https://amzn.to/3lNO70H

With this price it must be good! Because RPB is selling their chargers for 45 € in the EU ($39 in the US). And sold out in the EU shop at the moment.. Hope not because too many chargers getting broken... :)

This made me curious how high voltage and current the stock Rad charger charges the battery? I got a cheap voltage/current/watt meter so I will check next time the battery needs charging.

Thanks for the reply. So it seems to be normal for the Rad chargers. Usually heat on charger means budget components inside. My 7 years old 24V ebike's charger just gets slightly warm, so this made me think twice.

And yes, never leave any charger alone while charging. I have seen my Samsung tablet charger starting to melt on the table once... Good luck I was there on right timeand nothing started to burn.

Is it normal for Rad bikes that their charger gets really hot while charging? Or is my charger faulty? Mine gets so hot I cannot place it on any surface that could get damaged from hot temperature. Instead I hang the charger in air with a stand I found from my garage..

It's also worth mentioning that if you're concerned about your battery being stolen you should probably just bring it with you wherever you're going. It isn't hard to remove and in winter it's better to bring it in anyhow.
This is actually most important thing.

Of course there could be this scenario that you leave your Rad outside the shop for few minutes, and a thief with the correct key would come and thief the battery. But that is a very unlikely thing to happen in my opinion. ;)

And after all there are insurances for bicycles (at least here  in Finland), so you can get some money back from a stolen bike or paid for repairing the damaged parts. And while thinking of it, I should verify that my current insurance plan will cover the battery also....

Interesting finding. My key is marked F0x (dont wanna give the number though but the last digit it's not 8 :) ). So, wild guess that it could be from 00 to 99... And the font on the key looks like the same as in many Chinese products, manuals etc. As a comparison, I got a folding lock that cost me over 60 euros, and its keys got 7 characters long id on them.

Would be good if the battery had a proper lock since it is expensive to buy a new one if the old one gets stolen...

The Daily Rider in Washington, DC had a lot of complaints about Rad Power bikes and their build quality. Big caveat here is this shop deals with two of RPB's competitors, Tern and Yuba. That said, I do know that broken spokes, especially with the RadWagon has been a problem for them. Curious what everyone thinks about this.

How to adjust the rear brake on Rad:
https://youtu.be/3cBJIZNuPxI
No need for removing the brake caliber or wheel...

Broken (rear/front) wheel spokes are common for any ebikes that use (rear/front) hub motors. And checking the spoke tensions is important on any bicycle model and brand, especially after you have bought it. And it's part of regular maintenance, no big deal here.

IMHO one should learn doing simple maintenance tasks like these by oneself - it's also fun. ;)
