General Chat / Re: Question for Ryan

Hi Ryan,
Any answer from your brother about what he does with the floorboards on his RW4 when he loads it on his bike rack?

jazzy_bob, those tires look good. They look like they would be smooth and they look like they have reasonable tread design. Very nice.
I especially like the white sidewall design. It's what I used to have on my motorcycles.

I think you have what's called a Rad Wagon 3. They came with 26 inch wheels.

I don't know much about issues with e-bikes but I do know, in Rad's case, the LCD display has MANY functions and controls. It's not a dumb readout kind of display. It's where the software lives that allows it to talk to the controller and it's one of the only things you haven't replaced.
I don't know if the RW3 has a separate button pad so you can choose the Pedal Assist level, turn the headlight on and off etc. The RW4 has one and it allows one to access a hidden menu. If your RW3 has one maybe change it too when/if you change the display? Sadly controllers and displays speak their own language so one needs to have compatible controller and displays. Because of the incompatibility issue if one upgrades to a different controller such as an Area 13 controller for example, it has to come with its own display.
Maybe you could borrow the display from the same person you borrowed the battery from and try it out? It might work?
I hope I've helped.

Good comments everyone. Thank you.

A Shinko 721 in a 2.75 by 18 fits the RadWagon as it's presently designed. They are heavier but designed for a moped so I believe they are built better/stronger than tires built for a bicycle. The reviews I've seen on YouTube say they are pretty good in the winter too.

Rad Runner 20 inch rims would fit perfectly as the axle sizes are identical. The rim width would allow one to use tires of various widths but it shouldn't be a concern as the tires look like they would fit. If I had access to a Rad Runner I would like to try the wheels to see how they fit. It looks like, according to the spec sheets on the Rad site, they would be a perfect fit.

The switch from 22 inch wheels to 20 inch wheels sounds like a big size difference. It's the diameter of the overall tire and not the ride height. If all other things are equal one would only lose 1 inch of axle height and 2 inches of overall tire height. It appears, however, the Rad Runner tires are larger than the Rad Wagon so I would be very interested to see exactly how much axle height one would really lose by switching to Rad Runner tires and wheels for the Rad Wagon.

I don't believe hitting the pedals while riding would be an issue as one doesn't corner fast on a cargo bike, doesn't take a cargo bike mountain biking, generally only ride rail trails kind of trail riding. If it was a big concern for someone then perhaps one could switch from 170 mm pedals to 165 or 160 mm pedals?

General Chat / RW4 and 20 inch tires
August 11, 2023, 08:03:17 AM
I have a RW4 with the stock 22 inch tires. They are only available from Rad.  :(

Has anyone changed their tires to 20 inches such as the tires on the Radrunner? The weight rating of the Radrunner and the RW4 are the same, 350 pounds so there's no issues with the weight rating, payload etc. The tire width looks like it would fit.
When I wear out my RW4 tires I'm either going to get Shinko 241 moped tires or change to 20 inch tires so I don't have to rely on one tire supplier anymore.

FWIW I also see almost every two wheeled cargo bike is now designed with 20 inch tires. Hopefully Rad has a new RW in the works with 20 inch tires? RW5? RW4a?  ;D

Ryan, Thank you very much for the answer. I'm curious what your brother does with his RW4 and the floorboards. Please comment here when you find out.

I accept the weight limit is a limit and one would have to do things at their own risk. Thank you.

I live in BC, Canada and the Hollywood rack is sold by the Rad store in Vancouver. However they don't sell the 1 1/4 version so I would have to order it directly from Hollywood Racks. Their price is $747 US and, today, that converts to $1011 CAD. The Quickr Mach 2 is 679 US for a single and for an add on tray $479 US. It converts to $920 and $650 CAD so $1570 CAD.

Given that I need to order whichever one I choose, I would need to pay shipping, customs duties and taxes. I am leaning to the Hollywood racks as it's a lot cheaper than the Quickr rack, seems to work well and will eventually cost less than $1500 CAD. Whereas the Quickr rack will end up costing $2000.  :(

JimInPT and Radio Runner I understand your concerns. However I believe the design of the trike addition to the Hollywood rack was engineered and they have checked the weight limits, torque etc that could occur with normal use. During the video they also mention the trike addition should only be used with a class lll hitch. The tongue weight of a class lll hitch is 800 lbs so I don't think failure will be an issue. A class ll hitch has a tongue weight of 350 lbs so I can see how that could be a concern.

Having said that, I am now confident my RW4 would work fine on the Hollywood rack and a class ll receiver hitch. Now I just have to decide on which rack to purchase. The Hollywood rack or the Quikr Mach 2.

I would have liked Ryan to answer my initial question as the Hollywood rack recommends removing the floorboards on the RW before loading. I want to see if they have a "work around" for the issue as I don't want to remove mine before loading and then reinstall them once ready to ride.

Mrgold35, I am also leaning towards the Quikr Mach 2 rack although the price is kind of scary. I thought of the Saris but for the reasons you stated I don't think it is a good option for us.
I was also thinking of the Hollywood rack that Rad sells. I spoke to the Rad store in Vancouver, BC and they simply don't sell the Hollywood rack for a 1 1/4 inch receiver hitch although I see it available on the Hollywood web site. If I remember correctly, it has the same weight design as the 2 inch receiver although they say one shouldn't use more than the two bike system for e bikes or use more than three for conventional bikes. I couldn't get a definitive answer from the Vancouver Rad store about the weight limit verses my bike as mine is 90 lbs and the limit is 80 for the first tray and 120 for both trays.
I see Ryan has a new video about adapting the Hollywood rack to carry a trike and an additional bike on the 1st tray. I've examined the video and see Hollywood now sells the adapters for loading a trike on their bike rack and the rating is the same as my bike, 90 lbs. It also takes up the equivalent of the second and third positions. It's rated at 90 lbs and the first tray is rated at 80 lbs while the Hollywood rack has an overall rating of 170 lbs for a class lll hitch.
I think my hitch will be fine for two bikes as it's got a higher rating (it's a class ll) than a normal 1 1/4 receiver with a class l rating. I just have to decide which one to buy. The Hollywood rack or the Quickr Mach 2.

General Chat / Question for Ryan

Hi Ryan,
I posted this a few days ago in the RW forum but you haven't seen it yet. Maybe you will see it here, I hope?

I have a RW4 and I see you do also. You tend to use the Hollywood bike rack on your vehicle don't you? I weighed my RW4 and, with the front basket, the large rear basket, the floorboards and the Ballard Cargo Bags my bike weighs 90 lbs. Naturally the weight is without the battery as I wouldn't transport my bike with it installed. Most bike racks are not designed to be used with such heavy bikes. How do you do it or what do you do to compensate for the weight?
We need a way to transport our bikes to and from various trails so we can enjoy the rides more often.

Thank you

Dave

That's awesome JimInPT. It also looks like it would allow for the almost 54" wheelbase of the RW4. It is a great choice. However my partner has a bike too so we need to transport two of them. :-(

She is also looking at upgrading her mountain bike to an e mountain bike and I'm not sure what it will end up weighing.

I noticed the kickstand mount when I saw a review of the RadRunner 3 Plus. I like the look and features of the bike a lot and a centre kickstand would be ideal. At the right price I would probably have bought it if it had been available when I bought my RW4.
Have you contacted Rad Customer Service to see if the RW4 kickstand would fit? It certainly looks like it would fit.
