Rad Power Bikes Classifieds / Re: Feeler: RadWagon 4 StandKeeper
« on: August 30, 2021, 10:08:29 PM »
I you've got a RadWagon 4, you're well aware that the center stand bounces and rattles when hitting bumps of any size. It's honestly the only complaint I have about this awesome bike.

I challenged my uber-smart kids to solve this via CAD and 3D printing, and they've created a "StandKeeper" that works great. It just snaps onto the frame and stand, nice and positively. It stays put when parked, so that the stand just pops right back into it when you leave. (provided you don't kick it when the stand is deployed)

I tested it by hitting some big bumps, dropping off curbs, etc. and my stand never moved or made a noise. Blissful! The only downside is that I'm suddenly aware of how much chain slap noise there is when I hit bumps. :)

We're thinking they would be colored black, to match best with all of the RadWagon 4 paint schemes. This prototype is blue, because that's the color of high-strength printer filament (PETG) that we had laying around.

What do you think? Would you be interested in one of these?

Is $15 shipped within the continental US reasonable? (USPS flat rate shipping is ~$8.00)

Thanks!

Curtis

I've got calipers & 2 Ender3's...hmmmm

Charging cycles on the RP battery ought to be similar to any LI-battery cycle.  80% to 20%  I'm looking into a much higher AH battery still at 48v.  The person I talked to, get's them drop shipped (for free) directly from China.  He's a personable person, not looking for much overhead.  I'll post here when I get his own review using it on his RW3. He's thinking in the 60mile 80km range. That's about right.  Happy Shipping to all!  JLH

I paid for my RW4 the 1st week of September 2020, with an October, then November, finally December 27th it arrived.  I did get a $100 extra rebate.  Here I was "MID_TUNDRA" season in Iowa. The snow usually goes away by mid-April (it can start in October).  I believe the pandemic is the issue for most any shipping woe.  From Washington to Iowa is a ways. LOL  From China to Iowa is farther, but stuff from AliExpress only takes a week or so...IDK  Rad can't say it takes 4 months to get a bike.  They'd be done.  I'm nice, polite, informative, when I call or email Rad.  They are kind and try to give proper expectations.  The email RUSH when something is in stock doesn't work.  I'd rather pay now, get in the queue. That would set their expectations too.  "there are 295 persons in front of you"  just like phone bots do.

It's weird that a bike shop would refuse a legitimate request like that. Maybe they don't know what they are doing, or are too snooty.
Is there only one bike shop in town? I would do it for free if you were nearby.

My RW4 did the same thing. RW4 has a very long chain. I didn't see any photo of what the Rear Derailer Guard was to be positioned. I came to discover that the guard was bent in ~30 degrees in shipping, so my chain wouldn't properly shift. As I was trying to "follow the manual" in setting it up, I bent a link...UGG.  I called to support or sent in a support ticket...IDK.  They did (after 8 weeks) send me a chain with a splice link for free.  The original OEM chain had NO SPLICE LINK.   FYI

Rad Modifications / Re: Solar for RPW4 idea's & suggestionss
« on: August 30, 2021, 08:00:04 PM »
It's expensive, but it would work, and the AC output will run the stock Rad charger fine. I'm too sleepy for math right now, but I think it will give you about a 60% charge for the 14aH Rad battery, which is adequate unless you drain the battery completely each day. If you charge the bike while the Jackery is being fed by the solar panels, you will get a bit more.

It would make for a nice setup, and I'd probably go the same route. Were you planning on using the bike to haul the Jackery and solar panels to the campsite?

Yea, I thought it would work riding from State Park to State Park, here in Iowa we have 99 counties (101 county seats - don't ask)... each is "a day's horse ride" from the other.  ~35 miles or so.  It would be a fun ride around the state (not in Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb Mar "tundra season") or (June-Sept - tornado season the 95/95 humidity/temp) ... We do have RAGBRAI but that's in July...& people die only 1 or 2. It goes from the Missouri River to the Mississippi River, a Monday to Saturday trip, never the same route. Over 10,000 riders participate.   It's not possible to go SE to NW or NE to SW.  We are on a 1-mile grid, most of the state.  E-W & N-S are possible.

Rad Modifications / standard battery
« on: August 18, 2021, 12:13:09 PM »
Why is the standard battery NEVER in stock?  Why does it cost so much (yea I know that answer).

I've been doing some digging and may have found a source.  I will post here when I get a reply.  I'm not contacting a company in PRC. :)  English is their primary language.  They have an entire Rad Power section on their website.  News tomorrow or so.

RadRunner / Re: Chain slipping while pedaling hard
« on: July 29, 2021, 07:13:37 PM »
I've had a "clunking/slipping" feature when "tundra weather" finally left Iowa.  I received my RW4 in late 12/2020.  Our peak -30F weather.  It sat in the porch until mid-April.  The Battery stayed in my room.

I was frustrated with poor shifting.  I'm an RTFM "Read the fine manual" kind of person.  Videos are tedious.  As I read & re-read the manuals, I came to find the "derailer cage" was very bent, in shipping.  I didn't see a drawing showing the position of the cage.   Mine was bent in about 30 degrees, which was why I only had 2.5 gear changes.

Once I got that fixed, with a big Channel-lock plyers (the blue handled 16" model).  I quit buying cheap tools a long time ago. Once I got the shifter fully adjusted & set, I discovered in that process I badly bent one link in my chain. It was deformed nicely.  UGGGG.

I found my chain breaker, found & marked the bent link, removed the pins.  I was quite surprised the chain has no splice link.  That's kind of a PIA to do chain repair!!!  I was able to flatten the links on my anvil.  Found the pin that decided to hide under the tire (SH.t).   I mentioned this whole ordeal to one of the support staff.  I just noticed literally TODAY, there is a replacement chain, in my "order queue".  I don't recall being notified, but it's cool this was a warranty issue.

Just a thing to watch for is the derailer cage, which can be bent badly in shipping.  I'd like to ask RPB to add this NOTIFICATION, in the assembly instructions.  Oh, one more thing, they need to include that the chain should go UNDER the stand!

IDK, vinyl stipes are OK.  You have to mark them out so they get put down straight.  I decked mine out with reflective stickers, White on the front, Red on back.  The set RPB sells is cool, works well, looks slick!  They are only white.  I have some NTSB stickers (probably from eBay) that I've used for lots of things. 1/2 red, 1/2 white. I'll see how well they stay.  I did do a 91% alcohol prep everywhere. I also found some neat spoke reflectors, they do stand out!
See if you can see them in this photo.  Good Luck to all.  JLH

I ordered this set from Amazon:  https://amzn.to/3g37KzH
Both an R and L mirror. It didn't come with the handlebar clamps.  Fortunately, I did have a pair and they're working just fine.  Radpowerbikes only sells a Left one.  So watch out for that!

Before my Radwagon 4 arrived, I got a 1/4" or 6.35 mm torque set. A mid-priced one from Amazon. It really helped, and I'll use it for any repairs, or adjustments I need to work on.  I have the PDF of the Manual on My phone or Google Drive, so I can reach it anywhere.  Today it's a derailer adjustment.  EOM settings were a bit hokey.  Little things are to be expected.  I called support (that's the best way to get help) and he'd sent me some specs and a few how-to documents.  Very nice folks to work with.  Good luck to all, JLH

I have an RW4. I ordered RW's bags, they have a positive "magnetic" closing feature, along with being able to put it almost anywhere across the side hanger.  I'm very happy with mine.  See what you think?

Randy, welcome to the party!  What is the length of "Tundra Season" up there?  I'm in East Central Iowa, it's plenty long, but it has been that way in my 61 sets of seasons!  LOL

I ordered my RPW4 in October 2020, I also made a substantial list of accessories & parts. Most of the accessories came via USPS to my village in about a week-ish. My RPW4 arrived in late December 2020.  Since then I'd forgotten a few things and still, things have been here (Eastern Iowa) in 10 days at most.  I had to whine a little bit about getting a 2nd battery. It had a status of "processing" for 2 weeks, "if it is in stock, why is it in process 2 weeks later?"  I had it in 3 days.  It just takes a subtle poke.  I'm kind, nice, polite.  That's what get's you the best care.  You can't even show the slightest bit of angst in your voice.  It just doesn't help, the helper, to help you! I'm an Iowan, we are nice to everyone. I know folks notice.

I received my Tannus set in the mail today.  It does come with 2 liners and 2 tubes.  I have an RW4 they look to be the correct size.  I did order a spare tire and tube already.  I'm just amazed by the rate of reported flat tire occurrences!  But I thought I'd give them a try (sometime).  There are very few "off-road" places I'd likely take my bike on.  We just don't have scrap metal/nails/screws strewn on our roads.  Iowan's are very conscious of such things on our County & State roads.  A punctured $1000 tractor tire, just isn't nice. It is always "tractor season" in Iowa. :) Still, a shingle nail, or a drywall screw will take these liners out anyway, I'd imagine.

I have my own idea of a light 12-16gage galvanized steel ring, that can be made with a simple set of "tinsmith" tools.  This would work on direct tread punctures, not so much for sidewalls. And not require other than a standard tube. It's just in my head, but any knowledgeable person with familiarity with "blecht" might understand.
