Rad Modifications / Re: Track your RAD if its stolen?
« on: September 30, 2021, 05:11:13 PM »
Yes, you can do that from your PC or another Android device using "where is my device" until the battery is dead.  I've not searched for a similar Android device to the AirTag.

For security, you'd want it inside the frame!  Not just glued in/around/under the frame.  IDK.  I've had similar thoughts about those $15 movement alarms.  What's to keep a thief from just wacking it with a players?

IMHO it should be something in the battery or frame similar to an RFID but active, not passive.

Rad Modifications / Are you tired of waiting for an overpriced battery?
« on: September 30, 2021, 05:02:23 PM »
Yes, it's an OEM, but as RPB batteries continue to be on "shorthand" I've finally given up.

I found a reputable retailer, which is an RPB efficianito. He offers a 48v 17.4Ah battery. For less than the "standard" RPB battery.  It uses the Hialong Type one case/mount. I may get a second from him.

biggamebikes dot com. The owner/operator is nice, knowledgeable, helpful, has a proactive site. He offers RPB accessories too.  He's in the UK, but his batteries are dropshipped from the factory in PRC and have free delivery.  WAY COOL!

After that, I've found that case style is easily available. I'm investigating the building of my own cells/BMS/case.  Using LG, Sony, Samsung, or Panasonic cells. I'm not into using knockoffs.  What do you think, as the RPB battery is still intermittently available?  If you use a Bluetooth BMS, you'll be able to have another whole layer of data.  I may consider a new BMS for my RPB cells, and put in a Hailong case.  Why not?

RadWagon / Re: Front child seat for Radwagon 4

Put one on a rack-mounted seat, two in a trailer?  I'm past toddlers, but that's an easy solution.  I'd not like the extra weight on the front.  As it may cause instability!

I talked to support about a chain issue.  They issued me a warranty replacement.  I received 3, in the same box.  I added one to my saddlebags, and one to my toolbox.  OOPS!
That explains the $300 rise in the RW4 over the past year.

RadWagon / Re: Radwagon weight limit
« on: September 30, 2021, 04:43:09 PM »
Either the motor or the spokes.  You have to divide the force by the number of spokes in "ground contact" at a time, by the positive force of the weight put on them across their diameter and their flexation.

Hello, anyone here exceeding the weight limit on the Rad Wagon? I am looking to buy one and am a big guy and have stuff to carry. There will be times when I will exceed the 350 lbs. I will be on mostly flat ground but I am not sure what the weak link might be? The geared hub, the wheels, the frame... etc? Anyone have any practical experiences?

I am willing to do a little re-engineering if I need to but am hoping to find out in advance what might break first.

Thanks in advance

Rad Modifications / Re: Handlebar mounted basket
« on: September 30, 2021, 04:36:52 PM »
IMHO and by some accessory reviewers on YT, think handlebar baskets put unwarranted pressure on the thrust bearings on the handlebar post.  It makes sense.  I have the post-mounted RP front basket.

I’m looking for a handlebar mounted basket that won’t interfere with the cords to the display, gears, and brakes. I found one that I just zip tied one but it seems to mess with the cables which causes the gears to not shift and the brake to mess up. Any ideas?  Thanks!!

RadMini / Re: Best bike lock for Mini st2?
« on: September 30, 2021, 04:33:56 PM »
I put the Giant ABUS U lock on the side of the rack on my RW4.

Below is a photo of how I mounted my Abus GRANIT XPlus 540 u-lock to my rear basket - it's the only place on the entire MiniST's unique frame that works (the ABUS cable is for occasional use around trees and the like).  I know the 6500 is a folding lock, but may have a mount included for attaching to a frame bar like mine.

I think the 6500s are typically mounted to water-bottle stud locations like the ST's front downtube; you can also buy adapters to mount water bottles to the front-rack interface; I have one of these to hold two bottles and you could mount the 6500 to one side: https://amzn.to/2ZkSjwI

When I was researching locks, I found more than one video showing how to blow the 6500 apart at a folding joint (just like all the other folders), so I went with the u-lock design instead, and the 540 costs less as well.   It's certainly bulkier and heavier than the 6500, but in this location is completely out of the way yet easily accessible when needed.

If you're not in a high-crime area, the folders are probably a great option.  I live in a peaceful little town in the woods, but my recovering-engineer OCD wouldn't let me get the 6500 I originally wanted after I saw it defeated with a little horsepower.

I installed the dual water bottle mount on my RW4, I added the front basket.  The only thing freaky about it, it doesn't turn...DUH!  I think those are M5 bolts.  I have a kit of Metric bolts.  Easy to find on Amazon. I think I added 25mm in length from the stock bolts. Man those screws are handy!  I was able to stack it all.  I used more zip ties for cable management.  A good set of Metric tools go a long way.

Yea, President Carter signed the Metric System, as the preferred measurement standard.  Unless you only have 25+-year-old beaters, Most stuff after that is Metric anyway.  You can't re-source the spec's on a GM vehicle for SAE countries.  The US is one of 2 countries in the world still using the "queen's system"!

I kind of went overboard with security devices.  I probably have the only Ebike in my county.  "Is the Heaven?  No, it's Iowa!"  I wanted to have "a full package" a solution for many environments.  I have the ABUS 6500, the long reach U lock.  The 50# ABUS chain, the Abus Chain lock, brake disk locks.  I have the saddlebags, and you can mount stuff EVERYWHERE on an RW4.  I have most everything "mounted" but for the MEGA-CHAIN!  I'll take some closeup photos.  I'm accessory enriched!

RadWagon / Re: Which RAD Controllers are compatible with Radwagon 3 (2019)?
« on: September 23, 2021, 11:19:11 PM »
What stock components do you actually have?

The only model that comes to mind that would be compatible is the RadCity. Because they use the same drive motor.

I'd probably recommend going aftermarket anyway:
https://electrobikeworld.com/products/35a-controller-rad

That'll give you a lot more flexibility in your configuration. Those folks also have a ton of parts.

Ya know. Ebikes have a little ways to go before they're cheap and common enough to just throw together on a shoestring budget.

Ebikes have just become "Mainstream" in the past couple of years.  We're in a world where Ebikes are at about the state the Model T was 120 years ago, in terms of future technology.

How To Information / Re: 12 volt accessory adapter charging
« on: September 23, 2021, 11:11:36 PM »
I assume you want to have complete installations of this gear!  I believe your question gives a vibe that you dabble in DC power sources.  Technically a buck converter (in a waterproof box) would take 48v down to 12v.
They are a simple inexpensive device.  AliExpress, Amazon, can't go to RadioShack.  I know the last one I needed was online.
Well Wishes, JLH

Service & Repair / Re: Tire Pressure
« on: September 23, 2021, 11:04:37 PM »
I stopped around 30.  Just like tractor tires which have around 5-10psi.  The bigger fatter tires should be at least 1/2 of the pressure of a Race or Touring bike. Use your brain, RTFM (read the FINE manual)!  And if you are unsure, call or email RadPowerBikes, or do like you did post on the forum.  There is also a Rad owner .redit.  Give it a look.

RadWagon / Re: Load Capacity RW4
« on: September 23, 2021, 10:56:55 PM »
I purchased my RW4 so I could "haul stuff".  My max trip is ~21 miles round trip.  I have the front basket, the rear large platform. It fits on the back 1/2 of the rack, but you need to cut 3/8" off the front board.  Then it plops down.  I did get the huge insulated bag, I was thinking groceries.  I've not used it yet. I've got the saddlebags, the running boards.  Like Pirates, the weight limit is more of a "GUIDELINE" Just like your car, they state a weight limit.  You won't break the frame.

I'm upgrading my battery to one from "Big Game Bikes".  Check them out!  A higher Watt battery is near the price of an RW-Standard battery (but it's never available).  Gareth from BigGameBikes dot com has batteries directly shipped from China, NO SHIPPING, and he is very motivated to assist.  I've had an absolutely wonderful experience. I know I'll get my 3rd & 4th batteries from him too!

He's in the UK, his job was a "Covid-19 casualty" he started BGB.  He's a geek, he's passionate, he's willing to share his knowledge.  He has some very informative, lean YouTube videos.  He has a special section of parts/accessories for the Rad line of devices!  I know he has an RW and tries every product on his own Rad bike.
