Title: Rad Plus Models speed unlock
Post by: Ryan on September 22, 2021, 08:49:37 PM
I was watching the Electrek review of the RadCity 5 Plus and there was mention that the speed unlock is still on the new Plus models. It seems like it hasn't been found yet from my research but I'll post any updates here.  8)

The only downside is that the controller would then have to be mounted externally. I guess if it were me I'd probably just go with the RadRover 5 and upgrade as desired if you're going to start replacing parts anyway.

Since you came through with the speed hack I may be satisfied for now with the 6 plus! I had seen the video you referred to and was disappointed until you came through this morning.....This is my first E bike and if I had done a little more research I probably would've have bought the 5. I will see how I like this now that my friend can't outrun me on his Aventon 😎

I realize I may be headed down a rabbit hole on this but does changing the wheel/tire size make a difference in top speed? I keep reading conflicting results.

I've tested setting a smaller tire size to fool the speed limiter. Yes, it will work around the motor cutoff. However there is only so much speed you can gain out of the stock controller and motor.

Makes sense. Thanks!

Yesterday evening was my first opportunity to take a test ride after using Ryan's speed hack! It really woke up my Radrover 6 plus. I got the extra speed I was looking for and in my estimation it climbs a lot better. I think I'm going to have to start wearing a helmet!  8) Thanks Ryan!

Yeaaaa. I've been looking everywhere for the 6plus speed hack. You found it.
Thank you sooo much.

I got my bike together today and did you hack. I can only bet 22 mph even in PA 5 in high gear on a flat street with tires pump up to 25#.
I also made sure it was 750 watts.

After doing the speed hack, my speedometer seems to max out at 22 mph however GPS on my phone indicated a top speed of over 26 mph on yesterdays ride on flat smooth roads.

This is good news Ryan, thanks for doing the work.  I'm waiting on my 2 RR 6 plus bikes here in Canada. I think we are limited to a 500 watt motor here in this country, but I'm hoping thats just on paper and that we too can get ours to increase in top speed.

I wonder if the speed increases 20% (from 20 to 25mph) does your range or battery life drop proportionally too?

Both should decrease a little bit, but only because of wind resistance or other efficiency decreases at higher speeds.  Your battery will drain faster at higher speeds, but you'll get there faster too and total range shouldn't be affected much.  Total battery power capacity in amp-hours (which is the primary determinant of range) doesn't change.

Aside from safety issues (being able to control the bike at higher speeds), I don't see any downside to unlocking a higher top speed.  You don't have to use it often, or at all, but it'll be nice to have available.

Received my RadCity 5 + yesterday and can confirm the speed unlock does indeed work, thanks for the tip!

Can someone report on what's possible on the EU plus models? It doesn't sound like you can change the wattage from what I've heard. Thanks!

I have the EU Rad Rhino 6 Plus (EU Rover version, 250 watts) & I have been playing around with the speed settings that you demonstrated in the video. I can confirm that the Rhino will let you set the maximum speed to 32 kph (it arrived set at 27kph) using your method.
BUT I don't seem to be able to adjust the wattage in the way that you did, nothing happens basically.
I guess the motor is only 250 watts and not a restricted 500w or 750w.
Adjusting lower than 250 watts would hamper a bike of this weight, I would say that 250watts is already underpowering it on steep hills, emphasis on steep (45 degrees plus).
In every other respect a great bike, I would just like a little more grunt when I needed it on a steep hill.

My RadRover 6+ will not allow a change in speed, just flashes "1d" and goes back to the previous screen.  When did they stop allowing the software change?

I too tried it on the RR 6+ and it wont work. asking for ID. May be rad has blocked this option.

When I personally experienced the 1d error it was because I was not already in the settings menu. You must first hold the DOWN pedal assist button on the left and the LIGHT button at the same time on the left LCD display. Hold for approximately 5 seconds. Then hold all 3 buttons: Hold the pedal assist UP and DOWN button and the LIGHT button at the same time (hold for about 10 seconds).

Maybe someone who had previously seen the 1d error can confirm it now works.

Yes, 1d comes when not already in settings.

Any idea if the eggrider or another upgrade for more torque are working on RR 6+? I have the canadian 500w version and need a little extra power as I live on a hill and carry kids.

Still don't see any instructions on how to increase speed from 20mph to at least 26, thereby king this a class 3 bike. I purchased the RadRoverr 5 for my wife last month ( I have an Aventon Aventure) because it is the perfect bike for her style. Fat tire with a very smooth and comfortable ride. Unfortunately, I keep pulling ahead of her when I enter PA 4.
Help!

You HAD to take the video down? Why? Since when are we not allowed to share ideas, thoughts and/or methods to do stuff? Especially with our own stuff?

Exactly what I'm wondering.  I bet Ryan was pressured by Rad with an implied or explicit threat of no more bikes to review in the future; can't really fault him for that.  So, now we apply a little bit of research and republishing if the information is needed.

A verbal description should be sufficient if another video isn't made by somebody.

I wrote the instructions down to increase the speed of Rad Power Bikes as the displays shown were identical to what my RW4 has. Naturally this won't work for a different type of display such as the ones used for the newest versions of bikes.

I wrote:
Press and hold top two buttons (PAS up and mode)
Wheel size flashes
Press mode button once
Top speed flashes
Press top button repeatedly until 40 flashes (I'm in Canada so it's in Kmph)
Press and hold mode button to save

:)

Thanks Ryan,
US RR 6 Plus
Even though I only boosted the speed by a few MPH it feel as if I am free wheeling or coasting better rather than pedaling hard against the limiter.
Noticed a difference!!!

I recently bought a Rad Expand 5 (two weeks ago). Looks like with the newer models now they made it so the old hacks no longer work to remove the speed limit. Wondering if anyone has figured out a new way to remove it that doesn't involve rewiring or buying a new controller?

That's an interesting positioning. I and I'm sure plenty others would appreciate your independence and freedom of speech rather than adherence to what Rad marketing wants to hear. If I want non-reviews of their products I already can avail of EBR and Electrec who evade or downplay any criticism on any ebike they review.
