Title: Rear bag recommendation that fits the RadMini Rear Rack (need long straps)
Post by: R92024 on August 23, 2021, 06:51:53 PM
Hi,
I just bought a RadMini 4 and fitted the RadMini Rear Rack.
I've tried a couple of rear rack bags from Amazon, but the velcro straps are too short.
Any recommendations for a rear rack bag that would fit?
Thanks! :)

I got my mini a few months ago and was in the same exact boat you are in. I bought the orange Rad rear rack, and much to my surprise, the bag I ordered from Amazon wouldn't fit because the straps were too short (not by much, either). Fortunately, my Dad is pretty handy and he welded me up a thin smaller profile metal rectangle out of 1/8" steel rod with triangular pieces in the corners that have screw holes that match the pattern for the Rad rack (installed with stainless hardware and spacers to raise it up).  The Amazon bag I bought has long enough straps to go between the new rectangle and the Rad rack and the new rectangle is just a bit smaller so the straps work okay and latch...

Maybe someone makes a similar plastic or metal bracket that would attach to the Rad rack that would accomplish the same thing if you can't find a bag with long enough straps...

Thanks, Randy.
My compliments to you and your Dad for your ingenuity!  :)

How about trying some kind of strap extender? You didn't mention the size or construction of the straps that were too short but something here might help:

This one fits.  I tried a similar one and had to send it back.

Thanks, great idea!
I just ordered the bag JimL recommended, but if that doesn't do the trick, I'll definitely get some extenders. :)

I think this is exactly the same item, but a few bucks cheaper and I think it also includes the rain cover.  Looks like the dims will allow it to just drop inside my Mini's small basket on the back.  Not expecting too much for the low price, and I expect a cheap plastic feel, but we'll see!  Scheduled to arrive tomorrow; I'll try to remember to come back with any feedback on it.

UPDATE 1: it looks like this is a urethane model of the same bag earlier, which is polyester fabric and so should have a different feel and flexibility.  However, if you look closely at the earlier bag's photos, in particular the two bottom pics, I think you can see a mix of both materials, so hard to say which one would arrive.  I'll stick with this cheaper version for now and see if it's good enough.

UPDATE 2: it arrived on time today and looks pretty good.  Decently made and worth the current $17 price.  I got the urethane version, which folds flat when not expanded for use, drops right into the Rad Small Basket and it seems fairly weather-resistant.  So I'd say initial impression is that it's a good deal.  Others may prefer the less water-resistant polyester fabric version.

Many thanks, Jim!
Yes, mine arrived, the fabric version, and it is good... and it fits.
I think I'll keep looking as I really want a bigger bag. But if I can't find one, this will do!

If not for the basket I already have, I'd look for a bigger bag to attach directly to the rack as well.  I've seen several threads here with all sorts of bag-on-rack configurations.
