General Chat / Re: ebike speed when pedaling

Its all gonna depend on you and the terrain.  for a slow ride I would use pas 1 and a middle gear... hills and you will play into the equation.

I can use PAS 1 and do 20 on flats to...

What about the battery life? Controller sucking faster and more amps from the battery than before.

Yes. Battery is gonna take a hit.

But it's like anything at cruising speed you will be using the same wattage.  And now you can get to that speed quicker so it can balance out.

I kinda looked over my tow bike.  I honestly don't see it working. Without making a braket or something to mount tow bike to.

Happened in parking deck leaving work when mounting bike.  No shifting or hard gears even.  Just snapped.  Everyone from LBS to other guys that ride were pretty shocked the way it broke just basically getting on bike.

On the upside I can ride home on motor only, a couple hills definitely were pushing the bike and I walked the one but I can make it throttle only.  I have two really good LBS within less than five minutes of work.  But just couldn't stop had to be home by a certain time with the current quarantine stuff I knew it would take to long at the shops.

Did get to stop yesterday on way home and got a master link and ordered a "ebike" rated chain.  so hopefully I get more than 500 miles out of that.  LOL.

I guess that motor comes in handy. Can you share what chain you ended up buying? This is something I haven't looked into just yet.

Sure will as soon as it comes in.

I do realize a hub motor is not transferring power three the chain.

My only reason for going with a ebike rated chain is the fact that it's a cargo bike.  Which even without a motor is more load on a drivetrain

I have a tow bike on our tandem.   I could try and mount the one we have to the RW.

But I am  certain it wont clear the landing pad.   With that said I am pretty sure I could mount it on one of the rear upright bars(it wont be inline with center of bike that way and maybe super sketchy to ride).  I am not sure if it would let the tow bike sit level or even kinda level.

if you mount off the rear of the bike plan on some wide and well planned turn cause that kid is gonna be hanging out way back there.  It takes a two lane road to turn the tandem bike with tow bike connected and I am usually barely making the the turn.

Rad Modifications / Re: Front Basket
April 21, 2020, 05:40:55 AM
Those handle bar extenders wont hold any weight.  Or at least not like basket with groceries in it weight.

I have one of the baskets with quick detach on a bike  its OK(until you fill it up). Most quick detach baskets for the front are made to hang off the bars.  you can definitely feel that load and it changes handling.  Like Ryan suggested get the rad rack and then find a basket that sits on rack.  I am running a walmart milk crate thing it works but I find when loaded its kinda unstable.  I have ordered a heavy wired rack to replace I think I order the sunlight rear rack.  Even with a slightly wiggly plastic front crate it is way better that a handle bar basket.

Topeak and Ibera both have rear racks with quick disconnects either one could be added to the rad front rack. Topeak would be the easier system to adapt.

52v is way better.  The bike I built is 52v power battery life everything seems better.

Service & Repair / snapped a chain

So my chain snapped on the way out of work yesteday.  What kind of life span is everyone seeing on their chains?  I am almost a 500 miles seems kinda short lived to me.

There is no way that can be profitable in a suburb type setting.  I can see it in a big city for a side gig.  but no way i could do it where I am at.

Bolton, xtracycle, yuba, luna, pedego, blix, and build my own.  Probably a few more to i forgot about.

I am kinda on the fence still I have built a bike and cost is basically the same, Maybe more for me to build but I get exactly the parts I want.  The radwagon is under powered for my area, I dont mind the extra work going up hills but if I had built a yuba, or surley I would have put a motor on with more power and would have went 52volts.  I am happy with the rad but will diffidently being swapping motor and controls the day the warranty is out.

Service & Repair / Re: Possible controller problems
April 02, 2020, 08:34:33 AM
I agree with what everyone else is saying start with wiring.  then check controller..  If all the wiring checked out personally I would just upgrade to the bolton kit he has the no taillight ones marked down right now anyway.  would upgrade the capability of the bike and get a slightly more robust and programmable controller.

and its limited.  Fancy.   lol

looks good wish they would have thrown in the trash can(center console) in with the package.  that really does kinda add to the look.

Looks like it has gears now.
