RadRover / Re: Battery Mistake
August 09, 2022, 03:44:50 AM
Newer Rad semi-integrated batteries use surface mount fuses soldered to the BMS board. Wrapped in black plastic. Older ones are wrapped in blue plastic with more easily replaceable fuses, which can be replaced without completely disassembling the battery. I've not seen a video on replacing the newer version fuses. It can be done, but will take considerably more work.

similar issue....I thought the charging port was the place to unlock it when trying to unlock the battery the first time and apparently shorted the fuse after briefly touching the port with the key. RAD will not replace my battery so I must spend $600 on a new one. I admit this is partly my fault but this is a very common mistake I'm seeing and a horrible design flaw of the battery that you can't easily change the fuse...and the response to RAD by not replacing (or offering to repair it) is very upsetting since I've only used this thing for one charge. This was a birthday present for my son and he's upset, I'm upset....ready to take this to the dump I'm so pissed.
If you can't fix it yourself, perhaps you know someone who'd be willing to do it for you.

You can ship these batteries via the Post Office. I'll fix for free if you pay shipping.

10A charge fuse in red, 40A discharge fuse in blue.

The white rectangular components with silver endcaps at either end of your circuit board are surface-mount fuses. Labeled 10A and 40A. They will require desoldering to replace.

Oh my! What have they done now?

They made it where you couldn't semi easily fix your own bike and have to wait a month for a replacement battery.  I had mine for 3 days and the battery quit working.  Thanks for all the help, but mine is the black wrap too.  If somebody comes up with a fix for this that doesnt require a soldering iron, please post.  Thanks!
Not possible.

Unfortunately it got worse. Newer semi-integrated batteries with black shrink wrap use surface-mount fuses, which must be removed and replaced by soldering.

Have the same problem with my new Radcity 5 plus. Charger shows a green light even though the battery is at 60% and won't charge even after being plugged in for several hours. My wife has a new Radmission and her charger does the same thing on my battery. No access to fuses that I can see in the semi-integrated battery. Any ideas?
Fuses are internal on the semi battery. Contact Rad if under warranty; look for posts on how to access them if not.

The discharge fuse is on the opposite end and can be accessed in the same way, without completely disassembling the battery.

not normal. I would say the battery is defective. Contact Rad.

If you are hitting the speed limit you will not see full power. Check when climbing a hill, as more power is required.

The battery does not have to be at 100% to get 750 watts.

If you tell Rad you shorted the charge port, they will likely decline it as a warranty replacement.

Instructions on how to replace the charge fuse are here: https://www.radowners.com/index.php?topic=1655.msg10458#msg10458 If you don't think that you can do it yourself, maybe a handyman friend can do it for you.

It's not going to be as simple as replacing a sensor. You'd need a controller and possibly motor as well.

Hey guys. I followed the procedure show in one of the posts where you only cut a slit in blue plastic on the one end that has the 10 amp fuse. Unfortunately I cut just a hair two far to right with razor blade and cut into ribbon wire 1/8 inch. So although with the new fuse installed and the charger light now showing red instead of the previous green, and the charger itself heating up like normal, the battery is still cold after several hours of charging. It appears I cut 2 or 3 wires of ribbon necessary for circuitry to allow incoming charge to actually charge battery. There is also no response to pushing button on battery to see charge level. Any ideas on ribbon wire replacement or patching it? Thought I might scrap insulation back on both sides of the three cut ribbon wires and try to solder small wires across to bridge but will be difficult with such thin ribbon.
Just leave it on the charger. I believe that cable is for the display on the battery only and will not affect charging.

RadCity / Re: Loss of battery power

Nominal voltage of the cells is 3.6 - 3.7V (depending upon manufacturer) which rounds to 48V for 13 cells in series. Charge float voltage is 4.2V per cell or 54.6V for the battery, which is the float voltage of the Rad charger. Cells will sag a bit in voltage after they come of the charger.

The graph is a real-world test of my 2021 Rad Rover battery. I ran throttle only wide open on flat roads, stopped every two miles and read voltage after a 60 second rest.  I increased the top speed which the controller then throttles to about 24.5 mph. Watts ranged from 740 ish to 680 until the controller started limiting current as evidenced by the watt reading dropping. To calibrate the battery meters, I replaced the batteries with a variable power supply and recorded the voltage at each transition from bar to bar.

Its not totally just so you can get home so to speak. Lithium Ion batteries can fail permanently if discharged 100%. What's most likely  happening is the BMS (battery management system) is kicking in to save your battery from to much voltage loss and catastrophic failure.
The BMS does not limit current. I either enables it 100% or shuts it off completely.  The controller limits current at low SOC (State Of Charge).
